Given how they were performing, it probably won't affect them on the field very much either.

I didn't know that the Dodgers still had prospects left to give after the deadline, but boy did they hide some gems until this deal.

Getting rid of all that payroll will also mean the Sawx will probably be one of the top teams to gun for Josh Hamilton this coming offseason, which would suck because I don't need to see him hit 10 homers a season against the Yankees.

I wonder what this means for Bobby Valentine. For some reason I feel this could give him life in Boston for next year, depending on how he finishes the season. If he continues to mail it in, then he'll be fired like we all expect.

I tell you what I think - THEY ARENT EVEN CLOSE TO DONE!

Valentine - GONE

Lackey - GONE

Lester - GONE

Re-sign Ellsbury, and use this new found money to spend on guys that want to be here.

My re-post from the sox board:

Not mad at all.

got rid of 3 cancers and a role player in exchange for getting 270+ million dollars off the books so they can rebuild the team with talent that actually gives a **** and wants to be here, as well as top prospects for the future.

I'm sorry but i **** love that these free loaders are gone.

deal is official

the only downside i can see if that future FAs are more hesitant to sign with BOS seeing what happened to Agon

Gonzo was just the piece that allowed them to get rid of crawford and beckett. I think most intelligent people would see that rather than hey this guy had one bad season lets get rid of him.

Also his attitude has been awful all season, him and Beckett both. The atmosphere in that club house needed an enima and now its getting it.

Yeah, give a Boras client with one good year a huge contract after you got rid of three albatross contracts. Great idea.

I didnt say anything about contract size. Everyone assumes he will get a big pay day, and if the price isnt right than dont buy it.

It sure would be sweet to see the Dodgers miss the playoffs with this payroll.

The expected trade was completed, and is probably one of the biggest in MLB history. The Dodgers should now be contenders not necessarily this year, but most definitely in the years to come. Also in this edition of 'The Lineup,' Mark Teixeria and Adrian Beltre.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this trade for the Dodgers thinking this was the best use of their money in addition to giving up some legit prospects. LOL at them.

Red Sox probably would have done the deal for a bucket of baseballs. The prospect return was a bonus. Decent prospects too.

As for the Ellsbury thing. Sox need to either give him an extension this winter, or trade him if he won't agree to a deal or it is too much. The one thing they cannot afford to do is let him walk.
