Players to Watch for in 2013

Post#1 » by Ronito » Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:35 am

Who are some players to watch for in 2013? Not players that will breakout necessarily, but ones that need to pick it up for their team to have success.

I just wrote a piece for my blog -- don't think I'm allowed to post the actual link but it is in my signature -- and listed guys like Shelby Miller and Kevin Youkilis as two players that need to step up as a result of injuries.

Miller is a top pitching prospect and is ready for the major leagues. With Chris Carpenter's injury putting him out for the season and Jaime Garcia's status unknown, I think he needs to step up by not only grabbing a rotation spot, but performing at a high level. He was inconsistent in the minor leagues as a result of changing his mechanics, but then he went back to his original ones and went on a tear.

Youkilis needs to step up by stealing healthy and performing. The Yankees don't have any other options at third base right now and are already in search of another outfield bat with Granderson going down + Ichiro/Gardner both being left-handed batters. But third base is real trouble for them because they have zero internal options.

among rookies, watch out for the newest dodger hj ryu. world class change up and a decent fastball, now seem to have gotten used to US baseball ( he claims USA ball is slicker with less grip on seams ) for his curve. his slider is below average, but the kid can pitch.
ehhhhh f it.

Julio Teheran: everyone who's followed the minor leagues know about him and what he did in 2011 (ERA under 2, pitcher of the year). He took a step back in 2012 but that was mostly because he was developing some new pitches. He's gonna be the Braves' 5th starter this year and has been GM Frank Wren's gem in the minor league for years, he'll finally get a chance to shine at the major league level this season.
