What was highly anticipated is becoming a reality. New York Yankees legendary closer Mariano Rivera is expected to announce his plan to retire after the 2013 season on Saturday.

A press conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

The greatest closer of all-time will hang it up after this season's end.

One of my favorite players ever and someone who made me into the fan I am today. Hopefully the season will work out and not completely implode like it seems to be.

Just a dominate pitcher and the best this game has ever seen as a closer. As Sox fan I won't be sad not having to face him again, but I'll still miss watching him pitch.

They should name the award that goes to the best closer/relief pitcher the Mariano Rivera award.

Great player, class guy. Unfortunate his last season could see him not even making the playoffs.

Well said.

Unbelievable closer with an unbelievable pitch. I know Jeter is the face of that franchise, but where would they be without Rivera all those years?

i respect him.

he's the greatest relief pitcher of the new era where one inning saves dominate.
i understand this pisses people off and makes them angry as hell.

but which world series would they not have won without him?
serious question.

Which playoffs would they have not made?

Who knows.

All I know is every year, there seems to always be a team in the playoffs that blows it because their closer can't handle the pressure(I'm a Nats fan, so I know firsthand...). I don't know how successful the Yanks would be without Mo, maybe they still would have won, maybe not, but odds are any other closer would have probably blown quite a few of those games that Mo Rivera dominated in.

I hope he stays healthy.

What a classy individual. He deserves to go out healthy and to end his career on a good note.

I am a Rays fan, so any success by a Yankee is a PIA....however, in the case of Rivera, I too hope that he is able to return to his previous efficiency.

What a class act over the years that competed at near perfection at the highest level with one stinking pitch....

No. I think there's a pretty certain consensus for Mo being the best of all-time.

and it's not fair.

king of the 1 inning saves over other relievers who put in serious work for innings 7-8-9.
no wonder he's viewed as shut down in comparison.
