The following 12 players have been given a 50-game suspension, without the right to appeal, from Major League Baseball:

• Nelson Cruz, Rangers outfielder.

• Everth Cabrera, Padres shortstop.

• Jhonny Peralta, Tigers shortstop.

• Antonio Bastardo, Phillies reliever.

• Jordany Valdespin, Mets outfielder.

• Francisco Cervelli, Yankees catcher.

• Jesus Montero, Mariners catcher.

• Cesar Puello, Mets outfield prospect.

• Sergio Escalona, Houston Astros pitching prospect.

• Fernando Martinez, Yankees outfield prospect.

• Fautino De Los Santos, free-agent pitcher.

• Jordan Norberto, free-agent pitcher.

Alex Rodriguez's suspension has yet to be formally announced by the league, but sources have said that his punishment will likely last through the end of the 2014 season and will be subject to appeal by an arbitrator.

I wish they'd just ban A-Rod for life. So sick of that loser clown.

Glad Gio Gonzalez didn't get busted, turns out the reports that it was his pops getting weight loss pills was correct(though our season is in the toilet anyway so it doesn't really matter).

What's odd is that the suspension doesn't take effect until the 8th, the Yankees' next travel day.

To my understanding, he has 20 days to appeal and be heard by an arbitrator, so A-Rod could effectively play for the Yankees for the next 23 days (not counting off days, obviously).

If the suspension is upheld after arbitration, it would stretch into the beginning of the 2015 season. A-Rod would be nearly 40 by the time he returns in 2015.

The Yankees will also be off the hook for somewhere between $28-34 million if the entirety of the suspension is upheld.

I don't know why you keep bringing up the Cano deal. They would have put the house on him regardless of the situation. He may not be worth that much, but this whole thing has nothing to do with what they would offer.

So when are teams going to start putting provisions in contracts that gives them the right to void contracts when a player tests positive? Yanks might be off off the hook for $28-34 million dollars, but A-Rod wont be even close to the same player when he comes off the suspension.

I'm fairly certain that is illegal in terms of the newest CBA.

I think we all know Cano is going to ask for over 200 Ms.
and I think given how the A-Rod deal has turned out, the Yankees should be more than cautious about turning around giving somebody a boat load of cash into his 40s.

That's what I assumed. But considering the direction baseball is headed I wouldn't be surprised to see something change in the near future.

Oh, now I get your point. I'm sure they'll be more wary at this point, but being as he turns 31 in October, I'm sure that the deal that he gets would probably be in the 7-8 year range and wouldn't extend into his 40s.

It would be smart, but the actual bargaining that would go into that CBA would be hell for the MLBPA and the owners. Plus, with Bud Selig leaving after 2014, the new commissioner would be thrown right into the fire and that couldn't be very good.

IMO.

Cano is in a position where he can overcharge for years 31-36. That overcharge may be more money or more years. We'll see though.

but I'll keep the discussion at the biogenesis cases.
Why is A-Rod getting a bigger ban than the rest? Is it the cover up? Was that ever proven true? Is it because it's the 2nd time? Seems like this is being allowed because the public at large doesn't like him.

I think most of it has to do with the fact that he tried to cover it up. In my heart of hearts, I will give Selig and the FO the benefit of the doubt in dealing with this as professionally as possible and not dwelling on the fact that A-Rod is more of a pariah than a martyr.

Yet, I truly believe he should have been banned for life if the cover-up thing is true. That is the most unacceptable, scummy thing to do, especially since he keeps preaching this bullsh*t about him wanting to continue being a role model for kids and younger guys in the game. That's the most awful thing about all of this.

Selig should have just dropped the hammer on him and let him appeal being banned. I'm not sure what the arbitration process would have been for that, but it would have probably resulted in less of a black eye for both parties.

so Melky should be banned for life for his cover up attempt as well?

In the league's defense, Melky's coverup was a half-assed website, whereas A-Rod literally tried to interfere with the investigation by buying and probably destroying the documents which would have indicted him in the first place.

It's not a witch hunt, it's A-Rod and his people being idiots.

Personally I think 200+ games is a joke

If the league really has that much evidence against him, why not just put it on the table? Let the world see if he really is the fraud they say he is .. Don't start with all that "integrity of the game" stuff, that's stupid. Either you have the evidence and suspend him, or you don't and you let him play

In my country, Cycling is the #1 sport, so I know a thing or 2 about PEDs .. And it shouldn't matter if you're called Alex Rodriguez, Lance Armstrong or John Doe. If they fail a drug test or you have strong evidence of the player using PEDs, just go public and put the evidence on the table & suspend him. If you don't, than it either means your testing sucks or the player didn't use PEDs.

I'm in no case defending A-Rod, absolutely not. I'm just saying that the league should be asking itself why these players never failed a drug test. And suspensions should be the same for everyone.

I know only a handful of people share this opinion. This is just my POV

Once it is no longer illegal.

I think it's a bit much as well. We are talking about what 35+ million he will lose?
