Has it ever worked? The impact of star players in baseball isn't that much higher than "normal" all-star level players or even solid starters.

The Angels have Mike Trout and Ohtani (who is insane) and they're still average as can be. And have been for a decade, they had Trout and Pujols for a while too and still sucked.

Look at the Braves. They let Freeman leave, signed a cheaper replacement (Olson) and Acuna has missed half the season (highest paid player), Mike Soroka has missed the whole season (best pitcher) and Albies has been out for a while... and they have been better than they did last season. They won 13? Games in a row recently.

For an even more extreme example, look at the Orioles. They have around a 30m dollar payroll TOTAL and are in the playoff hunt. The Mariners too, they've won 13 in a row.

I feel that mlb should stop the double digit 10+ year contracts to players. They never done any good for the team. Farts in church end well better than 10 year contracts. A-Rod's 10 year contract with the rangers & the 10 year contract with the yankees. The yankees even tried to get him off the team before the contract ended. Pujols didn't finish his 10 year contract with the angels. There might be others that had failed double digit year contracts.

One problem is that a lot of stud players hit free agency for the first time and they're in their late '20s already.

Judge is about to turn 30 as he goes into free agency for the first time.

Mookie Betts' big contract kicks in and he's around 30 as well.

That's what's unique about Soto, he's only going to be 25 when he starts earning mega money. So he's going to demand a 15-year deal.

I’m slowly embracing this trade.

The writing on the wall was Soto did not want to be here anymore, we moved him early (just like Turner) so we maximized value, and we got our World Series with him. I would hate to be in a situation like the Angels where I have a generational talent (Trout) and have nothing to show for it. I’m not really familiar with the prospects we got but gleaming reviews from what I read. I also have full faith in our GM, Mike Rizzo so that makes it easier. Hopefully it all works out.

He's been pretty awful with the Padres so far, but he's got some time to pick it up.

He's basically Jose Bautista with a better batting eye but without the power at this point.

This guy is 24 and yet has been on the decline for 3 years straight.

Soto has been bringing it back on the offensive side.

He is now up to 152 OPS+

Every time there's a list of players to be traded, Soto seems to be on it. Makes me wonder about the likelihood he'll remain a Padre much longer.
