This is very sad news. Hancock was a good competitor and good guy i hear.

The strangest thing about this to me is....the Cards also lost Daryl Kile about 5 years ago....

That same day, they were also scheduled to play the cubs....

Thats not the only parallel this had to Kile. mlb.com made another connection...

Just three days earlier, Hancock had given his teammates a scare when he was late arriving for a day game. He overslept, and his cellular phone wasn't working, so teammates grew very worried until they were able to reach him shortly before game time. The incident brought up memories of Kile.

"That's why it's so different here, because of what happened," said Jason Isringhausen on Thursday. "Everybody worries. That's got more to do with it than oversleeping. [Stuff] like that happens all the time."

I hadn't heard of him before today but its always sad when someone is taken so young.

I didnt know much about him but it is always sad news to hear that a competitor such as himself loseshis life. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Hancock walked away from that early Thursday morning crash uninjured, but he was late for the team's afternoon game a few hours later. The club and several teammates said he had overslept.

But sources say he was late because he was hung over.

Two nights later, after pitching in a Saturday afternoon game, Hancock spent the evening at Mike Shannon's Steaks and Seafood drinking to a point of impairment, according to a couple at the restaurant.

Kind of puts a different spin on it...DUI twice in a 3 day span???

It's not a conclusive report at this point in time.

It is only hearsay and conjecture that alcohol had anything to do with the first traffic accident.

It does seem safe to say that Hancock went to Shannon's for dinner on Saturday and was also at the bar. But whether he had anything more than a drink with his dinner is not clear yet. All you have at this point is one couple, who ask not to be identified, claiming that he was drunk. Hancock was a stranger to them. Also, it seems possible that they interpreted what they saw differently after they learned that he died in a traffic accident upon leaving the restaurant.

I can't say with any confidence that alcohol did not contribute to Hancock's death, but I'd rather not leap to conclusions just yet either. We just don't know right now.

it's a shame that that might even be the case... let's hope for his sake it'ts not.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported in this morning's edition that late Cardinals' pitcher Josh Hancock was seen drinking at a downtown restaurant shortly before his rented sports utility vehicle crashed into a tow truck early Sunday morning.

The newspaper, citing sources close to the investigation, also reported that a small amount of marijuana was discovered in the demolished vehicle.

Hancock's blood-alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit in Missouri.

A few grams of pot were found in his wrecked car, although it will take more time to complete lab tests to determine whether he was high as well as drunk when he died. Not that that really matters; drunk driving alone is inexcusable.

Good to see the manager is setting a good example for the players.

I have no sympathy for a drunk driver.

Sure it was irresponsible, but I think he deserves some sympathy still.

I have no simpathy either. He put himself in that predicament as well as endangered others. I have no remorse for him.
