Ichiro to stay a Mariner (Article)

"He's the guy in Seattle," said Meche, who signed with Kansas City last winter. "With their ownership being from Japan, I can't imagine him leaving."

Meche's instincts were dead-on: Ichiro's not going anywhere. The Mariners are on the verge of signing the superstar center fielder from Japan to a five-year contract extension that reportedly will approach, or perhaps even exceed, $100 million.

That was quite a rant by Florida Marlins president David Samson, who enlivened the apparently imminent Ichiro Suzuki extension by calling it, "the end of the world as we know it," on Dan Le Batard's radio show yesterday.

Of course, Samson knows an apocalypse when he sees one, having stripped down the Marlins and canned the NL Manager of the Year in the middle of it, and every time you turn on a Marlins home game there's about 18 people in the crowd.

"It'll take the sport down, that contract," Samson vented. "Right back to the ridiculous contracts. It can't be."

In case he'd been too vague, Samson went on to call the contract "a joke" and "inexcusable," then accused the Seattle Mariners of "mismanagement."

Insiders put Ichiro's extension at about $18 million per over five years, so middle-of-the-order money for leadoff-hitter production, and for a speed player whose legs will be going on 39 when the contract is done.
Overpriced? Yeah, probably.

Do you guys think its that ridiculous? I'm not sure about that much money, but at the same time, I'm not really concerned about a player like Ichiro againg badly and losing his speed which is a pretty big part of what makes him so good. I don't think the signing deserved a rant of this magnitude.

Sounds good! Pay the man 18-20 million per year. I hope it pays off for them. There are plenty of these "buzz" players that are making 5-10 million more than that a year and Ichiro certainly has more speed and play-making skills than a hand full that are making more money than him.

Didn't this come from a guy who has had two fire sales with his team? And looks like one more is on the way.

Of course there is something to be said for the world titles they have but still I think the guy is way off base.

Not a big deal.

Ichiro resigning is not a big deal. So what if the Mariners paid him the big bucks he deserved it. Ichiro is a player that will make solid contributions night in night out for your club and he deserves the big bucks.

 Well its about bleeping time the Mariners paid a player & partially shown that they're committed 2 winning. Now if they can also stop trading players to the Yankees also. And stop getting pitchers who suck in the AL & does good in the NL only[Jeff Weaver].
I'm referring about Tino Martinez & Ted Lilly. And get good bullpen help while you got good players instead of after you traded them.[Griffey Jr.]
