Hypothetically speaking lets say that these players are all free agents at the end of the season. These three players are being hyped about getting record breaking contracts when they hit the open market. A-Rod trying to out do his current contract.

Miguel Cabrera
Johan Santana
Alex Rodriguez

So if you are a GM, who are you taking for your team.

For the Mets, its easily Johan Santana.

You can never have too much pitching, thats why I don't care how good you think your pitching staff is, you add Santana everytime.

Cubs fan, and I want us to go after Cabrera and move him to RF.

We are great at developing pitchers, we have one of the best staffs in the league, and it's a pretty young staff as well. And I'm confident i the future we will continue to produce good arms. But we need to buy or trade for our bats.

Giving more than a 3 year deal to a pitcher=scary.

So it comes down to A-Rod and Cabrera for me, and I would probably pick Cabrera for the sole fact he is 8 years younger, although if A-Rod can make the move back to SS that is very tempting. Also with A-Rod you get all the attention that comes with breaking records which draws more money, which makes the decision even harder.

Santana would be a similar situation as was Pedro a decade ago. He is just so lights out that you have to buck that 3 year rule and lock him up as long as reasonably possible. I'd give Santana a 5-6 year deal this year definately. No major injury issues, pretty clean mechanics, great stuff, great numbers. In this open market, he's going to break past $20 million a season, which I worry about, but I'd definitely give him the deal.

Cabrera is a world beater but there are concerns that he's going to have to shift to first or DH in the AL because his body size seems to be growing at the same size as his stats. And A-Rod is simply too old to give an 8 year, 30 million a year deal too. He's having a MVP caliber year this year but he won't be hitting like this for the next 8 years, I can promise you that. You're going to get a lot more seasons like he had in 2006 than 2007. And he had a very very good 2006 season, but it wasn't quite up to $20 million a season. So I can't see how he will possibly be able to live up to the contract he will get this offseason. mahalo

So your going with Santana Chach? Also, for future reference I think he'll get more than 5-6 years.

And I'm offering his six years. If he doesn't want it, that's fine, someone else can give him 8 years and have a 37 year old making $23 million a year.

I think Cabrera will have the best numbers during the contract but that's because he's so young he'll be playing in his prime. A-Rod and Santana will put up great numbers but will be on the decline of their careers. But Cabrera will be limited defensively and I really don't want to be paying $30 million for a DH, no matter who he is.

If Cabrera got himself on Weight Watchers or something, I'd take him over Santana but in the real world, I'd definitely take Santana. mahalo

As an Astros fan i would like for us to go after Johan Santana. I dont know why in the hell we got rid of him anyways. All we had to do was put him on the roster.

no way on earth a pitcher deserves 200 million. especially starting pitchers. Johan deserves at least 110 million.

Especially SP? What are you talking about, I guess relievers are more valuable to you. Barry Zito just got 126M and Johan is a about 100 times better than him.

And A-Rod will get 200M, you get one right, still a failing grade but better than a 0%.

100 to 150 is more reasonable.

u probably do know more about baseball than me. cause i am only 16.

I'm not mad, I'm just stating what I think will happen.

Miguel will get 200M because he'll be a free agent when he's 26, and someone will give him a 10 year contract and 20M per, he's already one of the best hitters in baseball at 24.

i dont think miguel will get 10 years. probbly 7. but not 10. just my opinion

I think thanks to A-Rod the only way a player will get a 10 year contract is if the contract has a bunch of team and player options. I mean how can you truly commit a 10 year contract to a player?

Plus with Santana even as he loses his fastball, his change up is just so devastating. On top of that him coming out of the bullpen for his first few years adds a interesting twist.

As for A-Rod, well he is the best player in the modern day era. SS/3B either one you want, plus with him you get the media and money like bigboy pointed out.

I would happily give Cabrera a 10 year deal with no options. It'll go from age 26-36, and there's almost no chance he isn't one of the best hitters in the game through those years. He's just been too consistent to regress in any big way.

You dont think that the new team would try to change Cabrera eating habits or something? I mean without a doubt he is an amazing hitter, but his size does cause some concern. Or do you play the look at the stats card? Either way Id have to balk at giving someone a 10 year contract.

Well, considering my team gave an older, much worse Soriano a 8-year deal, I'd definitely do it.

He's not Mo Vaughn or anything, and defense for corner outfielders doesn't really change the game much. I mean, ours is horrible now with Alfonso "worst route to every ball" Soriano and Cliff Floyd.

If Cabrera can play left field, then Cabrera
