In a surprising turn of events, the Diamondbacks and outfielder Eric Byrnes have reached agreement on a three-year extension worth in the neighborhood of $30 million, a deal that comes less than three weeks after the sides broke off contract talks.
A press conference will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Chase Field.
After the Diamondbacks offered a deal in the range of three years and $22.5 million, the sides announced they had broken off talks on July 19 while the club was in Milwaukee.
But the Diamondbacks reengaged talks sometime during last week

. Good for Byrnes. Bad for the Giants. I was hoping that he would come to SF. Like to see some of his hustle rub off on the new guys that are going to be moved in to replace the "old guard" guys. We got the pitching. Now, give me a Byrnes like guy at every position and we would win the World.

They overpaid to keep an average outfielder when they have more OF talent on track to hit the majors in the next few years. Stupid move.

Byrnes had a good year last year and is having a great one this season, but this I'm predicting will turn out to be an awful overpayment. Dude has hit above .270 ONCE before this season, has a lifetime OBP below .330 and has never had 80s RBIS. He's a solid player who can do a bit of everything, but he's NOT worth 10mill. He's having a career year and he won't repeat it.
I've got to love the guy for being an awesome Jim Rome contributor, but this is a bad deal. They should have let him walk.

The one thing they did that was smart was give him a 3-year deal. If a 3-year deal doesn't work out, people hardly notice and it doesn't hurt your franchise. It's the stupid GMs who lock mediocore players up in 5-6 year deals that hurt their franchise. Even if Byrnes doesn't live up to $10 million, it won't make a big difference in the long run as they can quickly cut their losses.

Lmao @ Yankee fans saying WE overpaid for an OF.
At the prices most players are demanding now, he might even end up being a steal. Like nykgm said, we were wise in only signing him for 3 years because he's getting older, and just as an insurance if he doesn't put up similar production. Sure, we've got some good OF prospects in the minors, but Quentin and Gonzalez aren't ready to contribute right now, so I wouldn't mind trading them for some more pitching.
Also, i doubt the main reason we signed him was for his production. We have an average of about 20K people at home games, if we let Byrnes walk, that turns to about 10K. With Randy likely done, we need another fan favorite to fill up some seats.

I like this deal. Of course they overpaid for him, but who doesn't nowadays? This is probably a career year for him, but he looks to be the new face of their franchise and might put some butts in the seats.
And as NYKGM said, it's a short term deal.

Yes, Upton has that type of talent, but he's only had 10 major league at-bats.

You're saying Byrnes accounts for half of your attendance? Interesting...
