Yankees won't go after A-Rod if he opts out

AP - If Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contract after this season, the Yankees insist they won't try to re-sign him.

"How can we? We lose all our money from Texas," Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Thursday.

Rodriguez has 3 1/2 seasons left on his record $252 million, 10-year deal, but he can opt out of the contract this fall and become a free agent -- a decision the slugger would have to make within 10 days of the end of the World Series.

Rodriguez is owed $24 million in each of the next three seasons by the Yankees, with Texas offsetting about $21.3 million of that.

He is guaranteed an additional $3 million annually by the Rangers, the original deferred money in his contract that was converted to an assignment bonus at the time of his trade to the Yankees.

Cashman said the club has not spoken to A-Rod or his agent, Scott Boras, about a potential contract extension

Im pretty sure A-Rod will opt out. But it would be very risky for him if nobody offered a contract that big.

He will definitely get a contract that big.

The Giants would offer a lot, they'll be clearing Barry's salary and looking for their next superstar. Their owner is willing to spend whatever it takes for a good team.

Cubs would likely be in the running too depending on the sale of the team.

No I mean if nobody will offer it to him.

He lost a little bit of leverage. He could have just said well yankees are offering 30 million or something.

But if only one team is willing to offer it. They may not get into a bidding war with themselves.

I still think he'll be back here with an extension. It's not like an extension from the Yankees would be $20 million a year, he'd still be getting his $30 million a year but without the bidding war.

The only ones that don't have leverage are the Yankees.

They're just trying to paint the picture of him being at fault if he doesn't opt for his extension.

Which will probalby work as the bandwagon for A-Rod in New York has always been wishy-washy.

Truth be told, he has single handly carried them and will likely win the AL MVP.

Although, I would vote for Magglio Ordonez.

Where would the Cubs put A-Rod if they got him?
We have Aramis at 3rd and Theriot at SS.
I guess A-Rod would move back to SS and Theriot would move over to 2B.

You'd not sign A-Rod because of concerns about where to play Ryan Theriot?

That's what would happen. Hell, I'm sure A-Rod could even play RF.

Pinch hit A-Rod for whenever Theriot doesn't feel like hitting.

Arod doesn't have to bat cleanup. Ryan Theriot can.

And they'll sell those tickets with or without Arod.

You're kidding yourself if you don't think that stadium will sell itself even if 9 members of this forum took the field every night.

^Not a chance in hell. This is the first season that A-Rod lived up to his original largest contract in baseball history, you honestly think he's ever going to have a season where he lives up to $30 million a year? The Red Sox have a ton of financial might but they don't have the same might at the Yankees and even with a lot of payroll coming off the books this year, they can't maintain a $150 million payroll for an extended period of time. Mike Lowell resigning for two years is a much more likely scenario. mahalo

I'd say every season from '98-2005 other than 2004 was worthy...'05 by EQA standards was actually better than this season...

Was he outstanding? Yes. Was he the best player in baseball? Yes. But was he worth $25 million a year? No. Maybe the 50 HR year in Texas because he was at SS but this year's first half was the first time I can honestly say he was worth the money (and he's cooled off slightly and going to put up a fantastic year rather than record setting year). And considering he is in mid-peak and is likely to start declining over the next 5 seasons AND he's going to get a sizable salary increase signing his new contract then yeah, I can't see how he would possibly ever live up to the expectations I would have for someone making $30 million a season. mahalo
