Record: 5-1
ERA: 1.29
K: 87
Walks: 31
Saves: 1

He is probably the reason why the Cubs are in 1st place. He is the savior of our bullpen.
Probably the best young reliever in baseball. Yes, better than Jobba.

No, not better than Joba.

No, not better than Broxton.

No, not better than Street.

Are Jenks and Papelbon considered young still?

Also this Francisco Rodriguez guy is still pretty good.

Edit-Also, I would like to see more of Marmol before I grant him best young reliever. But would I put him in my top 10 25 and under relievers, yes, prossibly even top 5.

Marmol: (25 Years Old)
Record: 5-1
ERA: 1.29
K: 87
Walks: 31
Saves: 1

Street: (24 Years Old)
ERA: 2.93
Win/Loss: 4-2
Saves 16
K: 59

Marmol is better than Huston Street.

Jonathan Broxton (23 years old)
ERA: 2.57
Wins/Loss: 4-3
Saves: 2
Ks: 91

Marmol is better than Broxton

Joba Chamberlain (22 years old)
ERA: 0.00
Wins/Loss: 1-0
Saves: 0
K's: 20

Still too early to tell.

Bobby Jenks (26 years old)
ERA: 2.90
Wins/Loss: 3-5
Saves: 38
K's: 56

Jenks is pretty good. You can't look at his Win/Loss record since the White Sox are so bad but he did blow a lot of games earlier this year that Marmol wouldn't have blown.

Papelbon is 27 years old so I wouldn't consider him a young pitcher anymore. I think 27 would be my cut off.

K-Rod is pretty good and he is a pretty good comparison to Marmol. They both have wicked sliders and other wicked pitches.

If you want to use ERA, Record, and Saves to judge a reliever be my guest. But thats far from a good way to judge a reliever. Marmol has left on the 3rd highest amount of runners with pitchers over 20 IP, now you'll call that skill but I'll call that being kind of lucky. Also, like I already said, I would like to see Marmol a decent amount more before I consider him even in my top 3.(By that I kind of mean, what did you think of him last year at this time, when he was putting up horrible numbers in the bigs.)

I don't like using records to compare pitchers I use ERA. You could let up 9 runs in a game but have your offense score 10 runs to give you a win. W/L record is a very overrated stat. Marmol isn't a closer (although must Cub fans agree he should be) so I am not using saves to compare them.
The Cubs use Marmol in tight spots like when the bases are loaded and 9 times out of 10 Marmol gets out of the jam without giving up a run. The only time Marmol has been bad this year is probably one of the games against the Diamondbacks. I think he gave up 2 or 3 runs that game.
Here is the boxscore for probably his worst game of the season:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/boxscore.jsp?gi ... b_chnmlb_1
You could see his ERA after that game was 1.82 now his ERA has dipped all the way down to 1.29.
The only concern I have for Marmol is his arm. Lou is using him a lot this year and I am concerned for a future injury.

Funny, you just did it. Also, ERA isn't the greatest thing to use on relievers, their ERA could fluctuate greatly by just one bad outing.

Funny, you just used them.

I'm telling you, to think Marmol's ERA will stay under 2 is absurd. Leaving 91% of baserunners on is pretty hard to consistantly do, and I would say the same thing about Putz and Saito who are the only two higher than him. (By this I mean consistantly considering this season is almost over.)

No doubt Marmol has great stuff, but two things I kind of worry about him is his walk rate and giving up a lot of fly balls. If those two would improve he would without a doubt be a top reliever in the game.

Also, just curious what did you think of him last year at this time, when he was putting up horrible numbers in the bigs?

To be honest I wasn't watching the Cubs at this time last year. Last year's team was so depressing. At this time last year it was like watching a AAA team since we were showing off all of our minor leaguers so I never got a chance to see his numbers last year. I know he had like a 5.80 ERA or something like that.

Okay now take that Cubs team and then watch it 15 times in a row with crappy players going in and out and you have the Brewers the past 15 years.

 You know it was his worst when it was the D'Backs of all "bats" to rough him up..

I wouldn't crown him as the best young reliever in baseball quite yet... At this stage of his career... he still hasn't learned the nuances of pitching... he's more of a "thrower" who relies on his very good stuff to get guys out... his control is a little bit of an issue, but by this time next year i hope he can have that fixed... and then maybe you can include him in the conversation...

and as far as having him close... it's a whole different ballgame comparing closers to set up men... some of the best set up men can not close games and vice versa... I say the Cubs give him that opportunity at the beginning of next year w/ dempster as a starter or being released...

Typical Cub pitcher.

Lots of K's, few too many walks for my liking.

Fun fact: The Cubs have lead the majors in strikeouts every year since 2001. That's pretty nice. I wonder if any other team in history has had that long of a streak.

Matt Capps should be mentioned as well. Even though he plays for the hapless bucs. The guy has some wicked stuff.

But What I really can not fathom is how no one has mentioned Manny Corpas! He's 24 this year he has pitched 68 innings 55K's 18BB 1.85ERA and a 1.01 WHIP :o IMO he has to be in the top 5 for young relievers.

Well if we're basing this award off of one year, then at one point, Jeff Tam deserved to be in this conversation :D or Chris Hammond... relievers tend to have high points. Mostly because a lot of them aren't scouted heavily until they do.

GREAT relievers do it for more than one season. It's too early.

Turnbow and Kolb had their one year too. :D

"Also, just curious what did you think of him last year at this time, when he was putting up horrible numbers in the bigs?"

Rookie season on a dreadful team and was being used as a starter even though everyone knew his future was in the pen. He only has 2 great pitches he's not an effective starter yet Dusty loved throwing him out there and refused to put him in the pen.

Also, he did make the switch from a position player and is still extremely raw.

I don't think he is the best young reliever in baseball yet, but I think he's top 5. And I think he's better than Broxton although it's close.
