"A new report says New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez's agent has spoken to a potential new owner of the Chicago Cubs about a bank-breaking deal that could give A-Rod a cut of the team.

The powerful Yankee third baseman is eligible to opt for free agency 10 days after the World Series ends this fall. And, New York magazine reports, super-agent Scott Boras is already talking to who he thinks is the favorite group vying to purchase Chicago's first-place team."

Looks like a team that would be more dominant than the '85 Bears.

When did you guys decide to give Pie a shot? You know JJ is where it's at next year.

Seriously though, I don't even think you guys need A-Rod, the Central isn't hard to win and that won't change for a few more years. But if you do become super spenders and do get A-Rod, your virtually a lock for the playoffs every year for the next few years at least, it's just too bad you guys have that crazy curse.

What does "give arod a cut of the team" mean?

According to the magazine, Boras is peddling a Second City deal that could go for an average of $30 million a year over 10 seasons, with much of that cash backloaded for the 32-year-old Rodriguez - who would then be given the right to buy a chunk of the Cubs at the contract's conclusion. The report does not indicate who would pay for this proposed, precedent-setting deal.

I wanted him on the Red Sox. But 300 million dollars?

Jesus. The guy isn't Babe Ruth with Ozzie Smith defense here.

Can't just think about it in terms of A-Rod as a player.

I'm sure John Canning Jr. (I'm assuming the prospective owner Boras is dealing with) is banking on A-Rod breaking the HR record and all the publicity and revenue that goes along with that. I'm sure Boras is selling that, in addition to having possibly the best modern era player ever spend 10 years with the team. The value of the franchise would likely significantly increase just after they've bought it.

And he's still probably the best offensive player today and would likely be playing a premium defensive position. Weighing all these factors, I can definitely see why the new owners would deem it a worthy investment.

Anyone worried about the precedent this is setting? Stake in the ownership of a team he has never played for? Now, I could understand a player who has played for the same team for a long, long time... if Tony Gwynn in his prime was offered a stake in the Padres, or if (by today's standards) a 28 yr old Pujols was offered the same stake in the Cardinals, then I get it...

But someone who's never even played for the team? This is beyond lunacy - beyond A-Rod's initial deal. Forget the baseball aspect for a while - what happens when the next big thing comes into town? When another young rookie sensation comes in, finishes arbitration... 1/4 of a million and a stake in the team as an asking price?

:nonono: I don't like this at all (though him playing on the Cubs takes him out of the AL :D)

Did you read the subsequent quote 2poor posted? He wouldn't get a part of the team until his contract expired. He'd have played for the Cubs for 10 years and would possibly retire.

No, I got it... it still sucks. I thought the A-Rod contract, the initial one, would bring everyone back to Earth, relative sanity. It's just getting worse.

I'm not outraged at someone owning the team while playing on it, that I don't care about. Its more of the ridiculous nature of contracts now. I mean, what's the next step? When does the MLB step in and say "That's too far."?

When they force the player's union to institute some sort of salary cap. In other words, never.

Yankees are sending a letter to Selig regarding this.

I think its bs but what a GREAT time for the NY media to start reporting things that can further distract A Rod :nonono:
