NEW YORK -- Joe Torre rejected a $5 million, one-year contract to return as manager of the New York Yankees on Thursday.

The Yankees offered Torre a one-year deal with a base salary of $5 million and incentives that would have increased his salary to $8 million based on postseason performance. Under that offer, if Torre reached the World Series in 2008, an option for 2009 would have vested.

"We felt we needed to go to a performance-based mode," team president Randy Levine said. "We thought it was very fair. It clearly was at the top of the market, but we respect Joe's decision."

Torre, who had held the job since 1995, made an unannounced trip from New York to the team's spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., accompanied by general manager Brian Cashman and chief operating officer Lonn Trost. Levine said Torre turned down the offer during the meeting, which lasted about one hour.

Torre turned the deal down.
It was a one year deal with a 5 million dollar base and 3 million in bonus if makes the word series.

Good for Torre. I can't really blame him for turning down the Yankees.

This might turn out for the best, in my view. Torre's poor game management has been hiding underneath talented teams for too long. Now he leaves the table without the Yankees looking like they pushed him out the door. It might make it easier to wrangle in some of the important FA's/potential FA's (Posada, Rivera, Pettitte, possibly A-Rod).

What about the potentially awesome farm-based staff the Yankees could have in the next 2-3 years? Cashman gets no credit for assembling that?

Dude, listen here brohegan sun, the yankees pay 40 billion dollars for Roger Clemens, play ARod at all and traded Scott Brosius, that's why Brian Cash-man (get it lolz cash man!) should get the boot.

something like 10 years?? and a good farm syatem is STILL a few years away??? hahaha
took Theo 2-3 years to get his players up here. 5 to draft and develop a no-hitter

i understand hes got the boss lookin over his shoulder, but thats just ridiculous

if they hire anybody else, this will turn into a full-blown mess(if it aint already). . .

Erm... if they were doing that, Mattingly would be the logical successor choice.

As for Cashman, he's not perfect. But he's kept the team competitive several years in a row with an overzealous owner picking through his every move. And as Steinbrenner has grown increasingly senile and has avoided getting in the way of team operations, Cash has put more resources into the farm system, which hopefully means less bad free agent splashes. The Yanks' entire rotation could be in their 20's by 2009, which is a far cry from what i'm used to. So yeah, i'm not pushing for him to be kicked out the door.
