Breaking News: Arod to opt out of contract

DENVER -- Alex Rodriguez notified the Yankees on Sunday that he's opting out of his record $252 million contract, SI.com has learned.

Rodriguez's decision means he will become a free agent and be able to negotiate with all clubs. Rodriguez's bombshell move will shake up the entire winter for the Yankees -- who had hoped to retain him with a big extension -- as well as other big-market clubs that will now pursue him.

Rodriguez's agent Scott Boras said he sent word of the opt-out in writing Sunday and left phone and text messages for Yankees general manager Brian Cashman. The Yankees have said that once A-Rod opts out, they wil not pursue him, since they will lose the benefit of the Texas Rangers' $30-million subsidy.

"Alex made the decision today,'' Boras said. "I thought we should notify the club.''

The Yankees were preparing an extension to his current contract for either five or six years, believed to be for close to $30 million annually. However, team officials said Boras has politely declined to meet with them in recent days, and they never presented the offer.

If what Cashman and Hank Steinbrenner say is true, Arod's tenure in pinstripes is done.

Loser? He is only going to break the All-Time home run record. He led the league in home runs this year. I don't think he is a loser.

He's not a loser, he works hard, he gave 110% every time he stepped on the field, he hustles all the time....

but he is asking for way too much money given his lackluster postseason performances over the last 4 years and the fact that 2 out of his 4 years in New York haven't been very special.

I have seen him look mighty feeble against the Paul Byrd's of the world when it really counts.

Like he said, the perfect combo. A-rod might set all the records but he's a proven choke artist in the playoffs (just like the Cubs). It's a match made in heaven.

Realistically I hope no one offers the greedy prick a contract. He's seriously a cocky bastard if he has the audacity to walk away from that money. I know it is his choice, but he should be happy to get paid as much as he does. Not scoff at it and look for more with all poverty others deal with.

Should be interesting to see what the Yankees will do now. I think they may still go back on their word. Or Cashman's word atleast.

Considering ESPN, FOX, other media outlets and MLB seem to think the sports world revolves around New York and Boston, it's not surprising.

Honestly, I don't see why anyone would be shocked by this.

He would be a dummy not to opt out.

Considering he single handley carried the Yankees to the postseason, the bigger question is this:

Who will be the scapegoat with Torre gone and possibly A-Rod, IF New York even makes the postseason next year?

A-Rod is a scapegoat for choking now? Let's all consider Bill Buckner a scapegoat and not a choker too.

In his first three seasons, he was widely considered the "scapegoat" by Yankees fans and media.

In his tenure, if we want to talk about "choking" by the Yankees, he was far from the only one.

Yet, always seemed to get the blame.

I don't see why Yankees fans are so bent because it was his right to opt out. It's not his fault that the ship is sinking and Boston is the new "empire".

Doesn't mean he won't be back, but I doubt it.

What people forget is that he wanted to play for Boston before that fell through and New York was the only team that would accept his contract.

At that time, New York didn't really need him. But now just after four short years, they need him back.
