Take this for what it's worth. A guy I talk to on another forum is saying A-Rod will be back with the Yankees on a 10 year, $289 million deal.

The guy wouldn't lie. His source may very well be lying, but it's a slow time for baseball so I'll spread the rumour.

If it's true, I think it makes both A-Rod and the Yankees look bad. The Yankees for going back on their repeated statements about not negeotiating with him after the opt-out, and A-Rod for costing his franchise $21 million that could've been spent elsewhere.

I know a guy that knows a guy that once saw someone eating a hot dog next to a guy that works for the landscaping company that does work on Alex Rodriguez

He would not be screwing the Yanks out of $21 mil, they said he would have to give them a discount to compensate for that $21 mil. Also, while it makes the parties look bad, they both need each other. The Yankees need his production, and ARod needs the spotlight. They can save face by blaming Boras for the opt out and for everything else. And if ARod willingly negotiates without Boras in the room, to me that says a lot.

The yankees might have a lot of prospects to trade (Melky, Tabata, Hughes) but they also have a lot more money to spend. I believe the Marlins wanted Melky, Hughes, and Tabata. Why not just give Arod the money he wants and deserves and keep the prospects. Trading all those prospects would fill the whole Arod left, but open up two other holes (1 in the rotation and one in CF)

So ARod would make about $600 million just off of his baseball salary during his lifetime. Insane.

How so? The Yankees are a better team with ARod, and ARod came to them. So why not jump at the opportunity to better your team? The only way the Yankees could've looked like fools is if they went to ARod because they realized they needed him and couldn't replace him, which isn't the case.

Arod came crawling back to the Yankees, hat in hand, asking "what can we do to make this work?"

I guess Boras isn't as much of a super agent as he had us believe

As a Rangers fan you should be happy he opted out. Now the Rangers don't have to pay the Yankees to pay for some of his salary.

Steinbrenner said the Yankees recently received a message from Rodriguez "from a third party" that he wanted to speak with them directly, a distinct change in his strategy from just a few weeks ago.

The Yankees, however, have known for a while that A-Rod still hoped to be in pinstripes. Hitting coach Kevin Long, who is tight with Rodriguez, said Wednesday night that he told general manager Brian Cashman during his own contract negotiations two weeks ago that Rodriguez wanted to return.

Here's how the conversation went, according to Long:

Cashman: "Kev, we made our offer and they shut us down."

Long: "I still think Alex would love to be a Yankee."

Cashman: "I don't get it."

Long: "Well, I just know how much he wants to be a Yankee and I know how much that you have expressed that you want him back. If that's the case, then certainly you should both still be talking about it."

Cashman didn't return a message Wednesday.

When Long heard the news Wednesday, he said he sent Rodriguez a text message saying, "If this is true, you're going to have an awfully happy hitting coach if this happens. He replied, 'Well, we're working on it.' "

In the end, it appears A-Rod and the Yankees realized they need each other perhaps more than they had thought.

I'm hearing 10 years 270 million but who knows. All I know is that now Boras has been made to look like a fol & I love that. Mr. Big Time Negotiator had to come crawling back to the Yankees & accept 20 million less than what they initially offered & accept an offer that was 70 million less than what he expected to recieve.

Well, he most certainly looked elsewhere and realized that nobody is ready to pay 25+ m per year so they ran back to the Yankees. Only team dumb enough to do so.

or the yankees realize they won't make the playoffs without him because replacing his bat is pretty much impossible

What happened to Steinbrenner saying "I don't want ANY player that doesn't want to be a Yankee"?

This is all about:

A) A-Rod and Boras know New York can and still will pay the most $$
B) Without A-Rod, the Yankees don't make the playoffs last year and as sad as it may be, the Yankees need him
