Who do you think will have Santana when next season starts? I go insane and say the Blue Jays get him. 8)

Realistically, it looks like its down to the Yanks and Red Sox, should get interesting.

I'll say neither the Yanks nor the Sox budge & the Twins come out of the winter meetings still with Johan. Then it will come down to which prospects that aren't untouchable to either franchise the Twins will want.

I say the Red Sox, and it kills me....

I much as I hate saying it, I think Boston ends up with him.

Why? Because I truly think Cashman will stick to his guns and not give up Phil or Joba or Cano. Unless the Twinkies are fine with just Kennedy, Melky and Jackson.

I just see the New England area getting richer by the second.

Hopefully the Yankees, but think he is going to the angels.

Why isn't anyone mentioning the Seattle Mariners? They have a pretty large payroll and if I were the Twins I would want to keep Santana away from the Yankees and Red Sox. Plus, the Mariners have a lot of pretty good minor leaguers to offer.

There is no way in hell the Yankees are getting Santana unless they trade Joba or Hughes..

Your expecting to get the best pitcher in baseball for Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera? Give me a break.

There is no way in hell Santana goes to the Angels. They already spent 90 million dollars on Torii Hunter this offseason and they are probably going to get Miguel Cabrera too. Plus, they already have a really good pitching staff. John Lackey, Kelvin Escobar, John Garland, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders.

Quote:
A Yankees official said Saturday night, on the condition of anonymity, that he is optimistic about the team's chan.ces of acquiring Twins ace Johan Santana.

The Yankees upped their offer to the Twins yesterday, adding prized righthander Phil Hughes to the mix in place of righthander Ian Kennedy. The Yankees hope the Twins will accept an offer of Hughes, centerfielder Melky Cabrera and a third, lesser prospect to be determined. The two sides could meet face-to-face as early as Sunday; the winter meetings officially begin Monday in Nashville.

If the Twins want more than Hughes why would they even consider the Red Sox package which can possibly include Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, and Ellsbury/Bucholz? That's a garbage package. They should add BOTH Ellsbury and Bucholz for that package to be even considered.

Kennedy + Hughes >> Lester + Bucholz

That isn't even close to true.

Buchholz > or = Hughes (who has injury concerns and not just last year)
Kennedy < Lester (Both are number 3 or 4 starters, but Lester is a lefty and has already made the majors).

I dont see him getting traded, but if he does I'd say he'll end up in Boston. But I think the Twins might just hold on to him and see if they can win with him.

Ah, Buchholz NOT Bucholz. Thanks for the correction.

But I truly believe Hughes and Kennedy have more potential than Buchholz and Lester.

And Melky > Ellsbury.

I think Seattle definitely has a shot at swooping in and plucking Santana from the clutches of the AL East. I don't necessarily want to give up Adam Jones but I think the Mariners can package four or five good young prospects (read: about half the farm) to get him and pay him enough money. Besides, this would likely be Seattle's pitching staff next year:

Santana
King Felix
Washburn
Batista
Baek

That's pretty solid overall for the AL.

I wonder if Santana would waive his NTC to go to the great northwest,

Johan Santana, LHP, Twins.

2007: 15-13, 3.33 ERA.

Contract: $13.25 million in '08. Free agent after '08.

Makes sense: Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Mets, Angels.

Upside: Not yet 29 years old. Has thrown 219-plus innings four consecutive seasons, with more strikeouts than innings pitched. Hasn't the big postseason reputation, but in last three playoff starts has allowed three earned runs in 20 innings.

Downside: Can walk after '08, has a no-trade clause, and could demand $20 million a season over six years.

What it would take: A three- or four-player package likely would require a pitcher or two, then, having lost free agent Torii Hunter to the Angels, an outfielder. The Yankees are believed to have offered Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy and center fielder Melky Cabrera, but not Joba Chamberlain. Likewise, the Red Sox have held back Jacoby Ellsbury.

Favorite: Yankees.

Before Hughes' injury, he was a much better prospect that Buchholz. While Buchholz closed the gap, I don't think a hamstring injury erases Hughes' ability or potential. But I'll call it a draw.

In terms of stuff and control, Kennedy is better than Lester. As you said, people may value Lester a lot because he is a lefty with experience already, but Kennedy has had more impressive numbers through the minors and flashes MUCH better command and control.

Really?

The Twins brass met until 12:30 a.m. and are continuing to field offers for Santana, a two-time Cy Young Award winner. The Yankees have agreed to include pitcher Phil Hughes in a package while the Red Sox have agreed to include center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury their offer. The Twins, who need a center fielder, rate Ellsbury as a better prospect than Hughes.

Ah, you're the type who believes everything in print. Ever hear of public posturing? Teams plant info in the media for a specific reason. You're fooling yourself tremendously if you believe anybody around baseball thinks Ellsbury is better than Hughes.

Ellsbury has been comically overrated over the last few months. A power pitcher with great command is a much better prospect than a no power slap hitting centerfielder. I feel bad for the Twins if they feel that way, but it's likely just posturing.
