Santana to Red Sox could be done by tonight?

Post#1 » by SportsWorld » Tue Dec 4, 2007 9:27 pm

Rotowire:
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the Twins have told suitors they want to complete the Johan Santana deal by the end of today.
But we're trying to set traffic records here. By all means, let it linger into Wednesday.

This deal is better for the Red Sox short-term but will help the Yankees in the long run when they have all their prospects still in pinstripes.

The Red Sox shouldn't care, not when they'll have at least two more World Series titles.

This just does not seem fair.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

A deal for Santana doesn't really hurt either team in that regard. Both the Yankees and Red Sox have top-class scouting and international development departments to easily fill their minor leagues with more high-potential players. Maybe 10-15 years ago this would hurt either club, but not now.

I wish the league could veto trades. If the Sox get Santana, I'll be back watching baseball in 5 years...

Let this be a lesson to all teams: invest heavily in your farm system and you will be rewarded tenfold.

You realize that most of the Sox best prospects are already on the big league club? Ellsbury, Buchholz, Pedroia, Papelbon. They also will have a rotation of Beckett/Santana/Matsuzaka/Buchholz, all of who are under 29. I think they will be OK for the next 3 seasons. The Sox also have a ton of money to spend on the draft this year and have a lot of nice, high ceiling guys in the lower minors. The only long term concerns the Sox have is replacing Varitek at catcher and Manny/Ortiz when they start to lose it (Manny appears to already have started to slip). But that rotation is going to be disgusting for the next 5 years at least. mahalo

I dont know about that, the yankees are good at saying one thing and then forgetting about it when the opportunity comes again. (see Rod, A)

The Red Sox top prospects are Ellsbury and Buchholz. Lowrie is blocked at second and short. Masterson was blocked in the rotation (Beckett, Matsuzaka, Lester, Buchholz, and maybe Bowden). Kalish is good, but still has yet to play a full year of minor league ball. Of the Red Sox best young players, they lost 1 of the top 4 (if you consider Papelbon young).

The Johan Santana talks between the Twins and Red Sox have reportedly broken off for dinner.
They're scheduled to start up again around midnight.

 They had to take a 2 hour break so Jim Hendry can go run to the nearest Wendy's and grab a baconator.

Hendry?

Bill Smith: We really need to get this deal done soon. How does Ellsbury, Lester, and Jed Lowrie sound.

Hendry: Deal! Pillsbury, Wester, and Howry are yours.

Smith: Wait...Pillsbury? Do you even work for the Sox? Who are you?

Hendry: Yoink! (Runs out the door with complementary fruit and bagel plate in hand.)
