PHOENIX -- The D-backs are close to completing a deal to acquire right-hander Dan Haren and another player from the A's in exchange for six prospects, MLB.com has learned.
In addition, the D-backs will send closer Jose Valverde to the Astros in exchange for infielder Chris Burke and reliever Chad Qualls.
Both deals are set to be announced later this afternoon.
Included in the trade to Oakland are pitchers Brett Anderson, Greg Smith and Dana Eveland along with outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Aaron Cunningham and first baseman Chris Carter
I like the trade for us..we get an all-star closer, now we need some starting pitching to get to valverde.
im going to miss you chad

Valverde will be so wasted in Houston. He will have like no save situations and his contract might be lower next off season because of that. I hope though, for his sake, that the GM's look at his numbers in Arizona.

I know right? What's the point of trading for a top tier closer when you're going to be loosing all the time and have no starting pitching to get to him?

Had 46 saves last season with a 2.66 ERA
man, we are aggressive. i really like this deal a lot.
Valverde is 28, by the way.
sign a couple of starters and tell me why we can't compete for the NL Central

That's why and even more so because it's is more than just ONE starter, it's multiple. You guys still blow.

Yeah sign Carlos Silva and Livan Hernandez the two best starters left on the market because you can't trade for starters since you have nothing left in the farm system. ZOMG ASTROS FOR TEH CHAMPIONSHIP PWNZOR!!!!!!!1!1!!111!1!1!!!!!11!

Well you traded a good young player and an above average reliever for a reliever who is going to leave in the off season and you still have no starting pitching.

You missed out on Greg Aquino. He could have helped you.

It's not like he
didn't. It is that he
wasn'tgoing to with Pop out in left for long term, CY in CF, and then J-Up in RF. I'd rather have Gonzalez then Byrnes, but oh well, we still have two studs in the OF.
He was in AA a majority of the year and was brought up to AAA in the late stages of the season. I doubt he would have been a call up anyways

You see, in the game of baseball, the team with the most runs scored in a game at the end of nine innings is designated the winner.
In the case of the Astros, if you can't score runs, you don't win baseball games.
And that's why they won't win the Central.

Arizona traded 5 of their top 10 prospects for Haren. This is great news for the Orioles because that sets the market for what teams like Minnesota and Baltimore expect in return.

burke is not a good young player..he is 28 years old, qualls i agree is an above average reliever, who i am going to miss.
as for valverde, he will not be a free agent next season, we have him under control for two more years

A Webb-Haren 1-2 punch is pretty damn nasty.

Meh. Eveland blows, and Cunningham won't be much at all in the majors, a Juan Pierre at best.
The others are pretty good.
Gonzalez is the meat of this, very good bat, with a rocket for an arm in the OF. Anderson could and probably will be a good player in the majors. Chris Carter we just acquired a week or so ago for Carlos Quentin from the White Sox.
This fixes our hole for a second starter behind Webb in the starting rotation. I didn't like having to rely on Davis to get it done, he's solid, but a little inconsistent. We can't rely on Randy either since he is near done, and is another tweaked back from calling it quits.
At least we kept Emilio Bonifacio in this trade, he's going to be a good second baseman in replacement for Hudson if he leaves this upcoming trade deadline ('08) or goes as a FA.
I don't like the Valverde deal much, though. I still thought he could have been effective here, he was a real spark in our bullpen, when he came in, it was exciting to watch. I'm going to guess Tony Pena will be our new closer, which is fine.
