The Orioles are stupid.

As usual.

Why are they stupid if I my ask? I mean Bedard already said he wasn't going to sign an extension and the O's are getting some great prospects in return.

They are getting a very fine prospect in Adam Jones plus more.

This also may open up a deal for Roberts to be sent to the Cubs for possible a combination of something along the lines of Cedeno, Murton, and Gallagher.

So Jones/Sherril for Bedard? Not bad, better than what I thought it was.

These all say close to being done, but it's basically done. Jones has a flight to Baltimore to take his physical.

If M's included Clement in the deal, I'm going to be pissed!!!

Can't wait to see Bedard in M's uniform!!!

I'm waiting to see the full deal before I call a winner.

But M's fans better hope they signed Bedard to an extension. Otherwise not only will the deal suck, but you'll all be blamed for PNF making like 15 GARRRRRRRRRRR KILLLLLL BAVASI threads.

HC, you know me all too well.

Since it's not completed yet, I'll hold some biased judgment, but if that deal from MLB Trade Rumors is the exact deal, Bavasi is challenged. Butler AND Tillman in addition to Jones? That's selling the farm.

Change the first part of the sentence to "The M's" and drop the rest and you got it.

Si.

UPDATE, 1-27-08 at 10:55pm: Jason Churchill, referencing three sources, believes this to be 99% done. He is hearing Jones, Tillman, Sherrill, Tony Butler, and Kameron Mickolio to the O's. He's not sure whether Bedard extension talks are a factor but you have to think that might be holding it up. He's also unsure on whether the O's would include anyone else with Bedard.

Bavasi up to his normal tricks. Trading for Bedard? I think the M's over achieved last year, and this move will only help slightly. I wouldn't be surprised if they lost more games this year than last year.

Why do GMs get away with giving the farm away from one player. Especially one who is
1) coming off an injury
2) never threw 200 innings in a season in his career
3) Had one great year, 1 pretty good year, and then an OK year.

According to the Baseball America website, if that rumored deal is true, Seattle would trade 3 out of their top 10 prospects for Bedard. I would assume someone like a Jay Payton may go to Seattle.

Not sure what to think about this deal to be honest. Bedard wasn't going to stay long, it clears $6 million off of a bloated salary ($95 million payroll for the Orioles).

Would really like to get a quick and dirty report on some of these M's prospects.

This is a horrible deal considering the fact that Seattle could blow away any deal for Santana. Sure, he'll cost more money wise but you will be trading less talent for Santana. Jones, Clement, and another decent prospect would be any deal on the table right now. Jones is Torii's replacement, Clement and Mauer could be a rotating DH/C platoon which would benefit both players health, longevity, and offensive production, and another prospect would be the icing on the cake. Santana goes to a team that could put up a major run in the West, gets a truck load of cash, is hailed as a savior, and gets to team up with a fellow Venezuelan in Prince Felix (he loses the King title until he starts pitching like one). But NOOOOOOOO, let's blow our wad on a kid who doesn't want to sign and has never been healthy. Idiot. mahalo

Chach, that presumes Johan Santana was willing to waive his NTC to go to Seattle. Quite a few sources seem to believe that once Santana said he wouldn

According to Churchill, it's:

Adam Jones, Tillman, Sherrill, Butler and/or Mikilio

Bedard has yet to have a clean season health wise and has over 4 years of service time. I see two bad scenarios happening. Either he walks this year or he signs a long term deal WELL over market value, thereby **** everyone else over in the process, and he never lives up to the hype. For me, Bedard was the most overhyped pitcher on the market in terms of what it would have taken to get him and what he will cost in the future. Even in landing Bedard, you have a rotation lead by promise in both he and Felix and unless both can stay healthy and remain effective, they don't stand a chance of catching the Angels. And even if they do live up to their potential, they aren't locks for 1st.

I saw the reports as well BBJ but that's no excuse. Seattle has money and can afford Santana and it would take less in terms of prospects to land him given the balking by the Sox and Yanks. Rather than wasting energy to give away the farm for Bedard, they should have spent their energy trying to woo Santana. It's hard to do without committing tampering but there are back channels that could make it happen. Bill Smith could put some pressure on him because he controls where Santana is traded to. Ichico! could have made some phone calls. Christ, the Prime Minister of Japan could have phoned Santana to tell him how much all of Nippon would love to root for him in Seattle. Then you have the younger right handed Santana-lite in Prince Felix to help make your case. Maybe it doesn't work but I'd rather hold onto their high caliber young players than overspend on an oft-injured pending FA. mahalo

He's got 2 years left on his current deal but he's due for a huge raise (I think he was asking for $6 million or so this year).

But its entirely possible, there's always the attraction of playing for Toronto as well.

He's also moving to a much better park in terms of pitching. Not many parks can get worse than Camden in terms of pitching in.

Overpaying is the norm in baseball nowadays. Good move by the M's.
