This Rays' 'sailboat' stadium looks pretty cool

Don't adjust your monitors, people. Pictured above is a rendering of the Rays' proposed $450 million waterfront stadium in St. Petersburg. The photos of this plan have been available for some time, but the team just released this image yesterday, which features the park with the roof in the "closed" position. As you can tell from the photo, translucency is king. And after seeing those Lindsay Lohan photos in New York magazine, I have to ask: Who doesn't love translucency?

The roof is supposed to resemble a sail and I suppose it does. But it also kinda looks like a kids' pillow fort. Not to mention that the long post in the outfield originally reminded me of Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

Still, I really like this plan, which could be completed as early as 2012. It'll be unique to the Bay area and it's obvious that anything has to be better than Tropicana Field. The sad truth is that until the Rays and Marlins get new stadiums, I'll never attempt to hit every ballpark in the bigs.

This design would make the Florida swing worth it, though.

Now if only they could figure out how to equip it with A/C.

Yeah it does look pretty sweet. Much better than that piece of crap Tropicana Field.

wow, this stadium would make the Rays instant contenders...

but on a serious note, I love their young players, I actually think they're going to be the surprise team of the AL and finish 3rd in the East.

Rays are going to be a .500 team this year, and will draw 2.3 million.

They will become the new dynamic team in the AL.

Rays are going to finish 4th in the AL East this year behind Boston, New York, and Toronto.

That's funny, you should be a comedian.

Seriously though, anything is an improvement on The Trop.

That is AWESOME. Is it being made for sure or are they just discussing it?

I guess its cool, its right by the bay. But, unless im missing something...isnt it just like a super small stadium(like championship stadium rec league size) with a giant tarp over it? Maybe im wrong in looking at that pic, but wtf? Whats so great about it?

I like the Marlins' newly approved stadium more. This stadium is unique, but as already mentioned, it looks like some cheap tarp over some small empty seated stadium.

Wow two new stadiums for organizations that don't deserve it. Got to love it.

The .500 is believable, but 2.3 million dude? Come on....

2.3's a little much, but Tampa fans come out in droves if the team's worth watching. If the team's good, 2 mil is easy.

Gotta be optimistic.

The key will be the early months (notoriously bad draws for attendance), and whether the Rays get out of the gate fast. The Tampa metro will embrace this team quickly if they start winning.
