Only days after getting bent out of shape over one of their players breaking his wrist on a collison at the plate(because no one, at any time, is supposed to play hard in Spring Training), the Yankees have filled his roster spot by signing egotistical 60 year-old Billy Crystal to a one day contract.

Of course, unlike Garth Brooks, it's not for charity but only to feed the ego of this dinosaur for his birthday.

Now, I'm not one to wish injury upon anyone, but it would be a shame if a misplaced fastball were to be fired into his ribs or perhaps at his melon.

Perhaps it would give Regis Philbin second thoughts about calling Notre Dame and asking if he can start at OB for a game or two

As a Yankee fan, I don't like it. Yes, Crystal has done a lot for the organization but c'mon. Not to mention the fact that he was part owner of the friggin Diamondbacks in 01 & got a world series ring as a result of them beating the Yankees. He does have Mickey Mantle's swing down to a T, though.

Before anyone comes in & mentions Crystal being a Mets fan in City Slickers, it was his way of thanking the Mets for their above & beyond support of Comic Relief.

BTW- Joe Girardi had nothing to do with this.

I'm just saying the FO didn't consult Joe on this. I would like to see Girardi put him through the boot camp running he put the rest of the club through.

Players don't run each other over in ST. The Yankees, or anybody else, wouldn't care if Cervelli (arguably our best catching prospect at this moment) didn't need surgery and 8-12 weeks to recover. A couple of days before that, Crawford did the same thing to whoever they were playing and they got just as angry, but it didn't make the news because there was no injury and it didn't have to do with the Yankees.

Sure, you can say he was just playing hard...I have no problem with the play or anything else. But my point is don't put this on the Yankees as being lame, because you simply don't run guys over in ST. That isn't a Yankee thing, it's a baseball thing.

The Rays have been doing this all spring training but it didn't get pub until they played the Yankee.s Maddon has already said he is trying to change the Rays' image of being a doormat team & this is how he is deciding to go about it.


& you know what, I'm glad the Yankees did this. For too long the Yankees have not retaliated when hit & when they did they got suspensions while the opponent got none. Remember last year, Arod yells HA! in Toronto, next game TWO pitchers throw at Arod's knees. Not so much as a WARNING from the umps.

Cervelli was blocking the plate.

Both players are trying to make the club.

Tough break (sic) for Cervelli....and i hope he recovers quickly.

Next time, down 3-1 in a ST game, give the runner an option at the plate. No, that won't work either.......

Anyways, the first series ought to be interesting.

I was loving this when I first saw the clip. I'm in the same boat I was in when Hank said the whole "Restore order to the universe" bit: I want this type of drama early in the season, I don't care that it's only Spring ball.

This is also why I love Joe Girardi so much, because he knows how to spark a fire under guys, not that Shelley Duncan needs one to begin with.

Crystal, a 60 year old man, hit an 89 MPH fastball foul down the 1st baseline. Can you do this? He also got a head in the count 3-1 & the pitcher had to throw 2 hard cutters to get him out.

btw- Tom Celic has done it too. If it wasn't the Yankees would you even care?
