Baseball Links and Whatnot

Post#1 » by Bleeding Green » Fri Mar 28, 2008 5:06 am

I thought it'd be a good idea to toss down some links to baseball websites I think are worth checking out. Please do the same. Team specific sites welcome.I missed a bunch so add some.

Remember when the Red Sox hired Bill James and came to the conclusion that it wasn't necessary to have one closer on their team, because stats said so. Ohhhh I love humor.

i recall a jayson stark quote (i think it was him) saying Saves are the only stat that can completely dictate the managers strategy on how to use a pitcher

i think a closer by committee could work and for a team like my rangers it should be a closer by committee not b/c i dont think CJ Wilson cant do it but b/c i think there bullpen is good enough that they can have a couple closers. plus like some say the most important out can sometimes be in the 7th inning rather then the 9th.

now come back and say the last 3 outs are the most important and hardest to attain

Go away. This is about baseball resources and links.

You obviously can't offer either.

Yeah, Athletics Nation is great.

Other sites that I like:

Sox Prospects -- Great source for news on Red Sox prospects. Scouting reports and all that nonsense. Lot of good members in the forum, like Chach.
Replacement Level Yankees Weblog
Rays Index -- Tampa Bay Rays blog
U.S.S. Mariner --Seattle Mariners blog. Lots of other general baseball stuff, too.
Win Expectancy Finder -- Calculate the win expectancy of any game. Home team is up 7-3 with a man on 2 and 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th? Find out likely they are to win.
Retrosheet -- Boxscore data throughout baseball history. They're adding old boxscores all the time. Great resource for career splits for players, too. For some reason other sites don't calculate this. Keeps track of no-hitters, cycles, 4-hr games and various things like that, too. Great site.

I'll organize all the links in this thread to the first post at some point soon.

Actually, from what I remember, James said that clutch hitting doesn't necessarily not exist, but that there's no real way to evaluate/measure it, and that the way people generally try to use "clutch" is nonsensical.

Anyway, make a thread if you want to keep taking bad potshots at James... this thread is for links.

EDIT: I guess what I mentioned is a change in his thinking. Still.
