Report: A-Rod, $28 Million - Marlins, $21.8 Million
1st April, 2008 - 3:38 pm
ESPN - Alex Rodriguez is set to make $28 million this season, more than the entire Florida Marlins' roster of 33 players that combine to make $21.8 million.

"The Marlins? It's amazing," Rodriguez said. "And they still seem to find a way to be very competitive. They have a great pool of talent; they made some unbelievable trades, so they have great personnel people. To win two championships in 11 years, that's really admirable, and I'm very proud of that organization, being from Miami." [READ]
Our actual payroll is somewhere around $16M, or so. We still have Carlos Delgado and another player on our payroll that extends it to $21M.

But, A-Rod's reaction is kinda funny, to me at least. :-?

$16m for the 33 players on the roster? Ne'er thought I'd see the day again when a team had an average salary below $500,000.

Well, they did shell out for Kevin Gregg's massive 2.5 million deal and a whopping 3.5 million on Luis Gonzalez and Mark Hendrickson.

Andrew Miller was their highest-paid player during the time right after they got him in the Miggy deal.

Ain't no way they're going to win a World Series with the current payroll, though. The first WS team had guys like Brown, Leiter, Bonilla, Nen, Alou, Devon White, etc., and I guarantee the payroll was higher than $21 million, even in non-inflation-adjusted terms. The second WS team was younger and cheaper, but still had the occasional high-priced vet like Pudge and Pierre. (And of course they had to break it up when those players became eligible to make more money, and now the Marlins Diaspora is enjoying success all over the majors.)

Somewhere, Jeffrey Loria is cackling like a maniac while he continues to pocket all the money he makes with the team.

As long as owners are not forced to reinvest every single cent they get from revenue sharing noone should feel sorry for them.

EDIT: clarification

When you say "revenue," do you mean money gained from revenue sharing or the actual profits and earnings a team makes?
