Mauer finally deciding to hit some homers?

Post#1 » by Jwade » Mon May 25, 2009 12:37 am

The guy misses the first 20ish games and he has already passed his home run total from last year. And he is only 5 off from his season high.

I see nothing different about him other than now he is starting to hit with more of an upper-cut swing.

Driving the ball better especially to left. I think right now he's the best hitter in baseball and may even challenge that 400 mark to the tune of about 380.

He came in and pitch hit in the 9th today and hit a 2 run homer to the right upper deck...

He is having an amazing month.

On my fantasy team. Thinking, damn he's not in the lineup today but maybe he'll get an AB. Well, he can't do anything with one AB. 1-1, HR, 2RBI

I think it's going to force the Twins to try and get him signed longterm. I believe he's making about 12 next year and then is a free agent. If you look at contracts of guys like Manny, steroid boy (A-Rod) and Pujols i think Mauer is probably worth 15-20 even at 26 years old. The twinkies cant afford that but may have to pay it or he'll be catching in Fenway or the Bronx.

Who knows what Mauer could get from the Sox, Yanks, Mets if he was to hit the open market.

What helps him is eventually he can catch, DH and play 1st. As for how much, i'd say 20m per.

Anyone else remember how much criticism was heaped on the Twins when they reached for the cheaper, hometown kid with the 1st overall pick when Mark Prior was available? I don't think they regret it.

I thought McCann would become/remain the best offensive catcher in baseball this year, but Mauer has taken it to an entirely different level so far. Plus he has incredible sideburns.

What do people make of the fact that he's not really pulling anything for homeruns, just spraying to the opposite field? Is it just the way he's catching pitches? Maybe he's seeing a lot of changeups or 4-seamers that were supposed to be down and away but he's catching them a bit up in the zone?

Well he has always been an awesome opposite field hitter. And it appears as though a lot of his homers this year have been off hangers. So you would think they would try to pound a fastball to the lower outside.

But then again Mauer can easily turn those into doubles to.

Texiera money, easily. The fact he's a catcher only boosts his market value even more.

It will be interesting to see what happens, I think the Twins pretty much have to keep Mauer considering he's a hometown guy and the face of the team. Still, if it gets to the open market I don't see how the Twins can make a comparable offer to the Yankees or Red Sox.
