Next player to hit 400
I honestly think Joe Mauer has a chance to do it. The thing i think it takes is someone that has a great eye and gets a fair number of walks. Only problem with Mauer is he's at about 110 ABs and it would take about 500 to qualify.

Re: Next player to hit 400
I don't think Mauer will ever hit .400. Its way to tough. Him being a catcher to me makes it ten times tougher. His cloest year was .347. Besides that his best year was .328 i believe. He has a long long way to go. I think Ichrio still has the best over all shot at taking it. Its tough to say.

And I dont mean Ichrio this year. I am talking about years in the future. Mauer may be able to qualify, if they put him at DH instead of resting him on some of his off days. But I don't think he will be hitting .400 by the middle of August. I would be very surprised.

No.
Basketball is driven by three principles:
1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability

I don't think Mauer will hit .400, but unless he gets hurt again he should have no problem qualifying. It take 3.1 plate appearances for every game you team has played to qualify, he's 31 plate appearances behind that pace right now.

Ichiro's 35 years old, his best years are probably behind him.

He shows no signs of slowing down.

Sure, but I still think it's unlikely that he's going to put up a career year at this point.

Pujols before Mauer, although I doubt either ever do it.

IMO I think it will be a veteran player to break the record.

It's not really a "record"
Ted Williams batted .406, last player to bat over .400. There are plenty of players with higher batting averages before that... .420+ range. Those were different eras though, we will never EVER see anything in that range ever again. I'd consider hitting .400 to be a modern record in itself.
For years Ted Williams was convinced Nomar Garciaparra was going to be the guy who was going to hit .400 next, considering his .372 average in 2000. Guys like Tony Gwynn and Chipper Jones always were in good running, but I'm not sure Joe Mauer is a good enough pure hitter to do it. Like someone said earlier, i would not be at all surprised if Ichiro would do it one of these next few years, even at his old age.

I feel like I need to point out Mauer has won 2 out of the last 3 AL batting titles and has a higher batting average since 2006 than Ichiro.

Mauer is the first and second AL Catcher ever to win a batting title.

Ok.
I'm not saying he can't. He's certainly younger and has more chances in his future. Being an everyday catcher certainly does not help him though, which is my point.

4 for 4 last night for Mauer. Average up to .429. Yikes. Did the math and it looks like in a couple weeks if he keeps up his plate appearances per game he will start qualifying amongst league leaders.

To be honest I think cranking 400 homers in one season is too hard to do these days.
Go Raps!!

Re: Next player to hit 400
Ichrios batting average .375 Mauers .382
Lets see who's is higher at the end of the season.
My money is on Ichrio.

ichiro could probably do it if the whole field was made of artificial turf
