The Athletics and Cardinals have completed a trade that sends outfielder Matt Holliday to St. Louis in exchange for third baseman Brett Wallace, outfielder Shane Peterson and right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
In addition, sources said the Athletics will throw in $1.5 million to the Cardinals.

Re: Cards acquire Matt Holliday
I'm not sure what the Cards gave up talent-wise, but this can really only end well as a two month rental.

Brett Wallace is too much to give up for a 3 month rental of a player who has been somewhat disappointing.

^ Agreed, as a Cardinals fan, I'm not too happy about how much we gave up for what could very well turn out to be a two-month rental.
Well, here's what the St. Louis front office probably was thinking...
1. We have a good chance to win the NL Central if we can find someone to play left field who isn't hitting around .150 with no power (as Duncan and Ankiel have been doing ever since early May).
2. Wallace is our best prospect, but we're not sure he can play anywhere but first base in the big leagues, and we sorta have first base covered.
This will prove a good trade for the Cardinals if they make it to the postseason, and then Holliday signs a new contract that is not a wild overexaggeration of what he is worth. And at least for the rest of this season, there's now a decent starter at every field position, and a pretty good pitching staff too if you overlook the #5 starter. I don't really like the trade, but I'll hope for the best.

Even if it's a rental you'll still get the picks if he walks after the season.
I like the deal for the Cards.

Part of the reason Beane traded Holliday is because he didn't want to risk offering him arbitration only to have him accept and be on the hook for a $13+ million and no picks. It's not a sure thing St. Louis offers him arbitration, and Wallace is one hell of a prospect to give up even if they do end up getting those picks. And given how badly Beane fleeced St. Louis with the Mulder trade, I just don't have a good feeling about this trade for Cardinal fans.
Go team! (The one I want to win, preferably)

lol that's definitely a sure thing. The Cards want draftpicks just in case Holiday leaves.
