LOL. What a pinch hitter he'll be!

Wait, what? I understand claiming Rios, but taking him on and then putting most of the roster up for grabs and letting Thome go (unless they got a pretty damned good prospect in return) doesn't make much sense, especially as Thome is guaranteed to be a comp-B free agent at worst (and was projected as comp-A in the AL)...don't quite get Williams' plan here.

What an interesting waiver period the MLB has had.

I'd hope Loney would be put on the bench, since he's sort of terrible.

To say the least.

Not sure I understand this move. Thome has played what 4 games at first in the past 4 years? And for his career he's an awful pinch hitter.

He's just going to be a pinch hitter. They gave up a nobody, so it's only a positive thing for them. Especially if they make the series, they'll have their DH.

and id bet thome would accept arbitration since he may not command much on the open market

His arb would be around 10 or 11 million. We're trying to trim payroll and get younger. This team underachieved big time and the offense became anemic.

Hard to say...I don't see him accepting arbitration with the Dodgers because I can't see him accepting a role that would see him max out at 200-300 ABs, regardless of the dollar figure. It would be a pretty crazy exercise in brinksmanship to offer him arbitration while simultaneously trying to dissuade him from taking it, though.
