Frist of all if want to give Mauer the mvp just give it him, dont penalize other players for not being catchers. and second Mauer missed almost a month , and thats can only help your batting avg , and third you cant give the mvp for player on losing team , because you have to reward winning, beside if your part of losing team how Valuable really are you ?!

its between Tex and Jeter....

Despite missing a month, Mauer still has the highest WAR and the highest VORP in the AL, ahead of both Jeter and Teixeira. Find another stat system, I'm pretty sure Mauer will top Jeter.

Team success should have zero bearing on the MVP vote.

He's playing the most dificult position yet he has the highest OPS, BA, on pace to hit 30 HR's while driving in more than 100 RBI's ALL while missing a month.

NO he's not part of the losing, if anything, he's the reason the twins are in 2nd place in the AL central. I'd agree with you if his team had the worst record but they are ONE game away from being a 500 team.

I'm a Yankees fan, Jeter is my favorite player and and I would LOVE for him to win an MVP, but, Mauer deserves it. Jeter is a big reason for our success but if we were to lose him I doubt we become Royals bad(which the twins would be without Mauer).

I agree with everything except for the last part.

I would say that team success should have SOME bearing not all of it..

I love Jeter, too, but Mauer has lit the world on fire and then some. The Twins missing the playoffs should have no bearing on him winning the award.

Strongly disagree on that statement. I've gone as far as saying if your team is not in the playoffs you have no business winning an MVP.

As for the AL MVP I'd like to see Jeter get one despite being a Sox fan, but it's going to be Tex.

I don't know why people keep mentioning Derek Jeter for MVP, he's not even the Most Valuable in his own team let alone more valuable than Mauer who is MILES ahead of him.

Factoring in positional value (and the fact that Jeter is playing said position much better this season), I'd probably put him in as the most valuable Yankee. If there's an overrated Yankee MVP candidate, it's Teixeira, who's having a good season but one that's no better than a number of other first basemen in both leagues.

But Mauer is so far ahead of everyone that I can't believe this is actually a debate. He could be playing first base and that offensive production would still make him the best candidate. The best/most valuable player in the league in any given season isn't always on a playoff team. It's time people got over that.

I don't give Jeter bonus points for playing shortstop although he is playing slightly better defence than previous years and even that's not saying much given how horrendous he's been in the past.

Mauer is having an excellent season. But IMO can't be the MVP if he's not in the playoffs. It is a team barely over .500, but if they could back into the playoffs then it is his to lose. People have a different interpatation of what the MVP is and I see nothing wrong with that.

I don't get how the best player isn't by definition the most valuable player. You can't control what team you're on, just how you perform.

I take it as the most valuable player to the team. If the Twins didn't have Mauer they still wouldn't be any good. I thought the same for Arod and Dawson. I think there should be a most outstanding player award (call it what you want) and a most valuable player award.

That reasoning is flawed. The twins wouldn't be anywhere close to 500 without Mauer. If Jeter were to be taken off the yanks, I'm pretty sure the team would still be competing to make the playoffs.

Baseball is a team sport. I have yet to see ONE player carry a team while the rest of the team sucked ass. You could put up 60 HR's with 150 RBI's, but if the rest of the team sucks, you're not making the playoffs.. It's not Mauer's fault his team isn't as stacked as the yankees.

And I say all of this being a HUGE Derek jeter fan, who'll probably burst in to tears the day he announces his retirement.
