Grant Desme was rated by Sickels as the 4th-best prospect in their organization, eighth by BA. A 23-year old giving up the opportunity for riches and fame in favour of a life of chastity and the chance to listen to other people's problems...that has to be a first.

Good for him. He obviously knew that fame and fortune weren't going to make him happy. If being a priest is his choice, good for him.

Why not play out his career and then become a priest? He could've done a lot more with the money he'd made.

A priest with lots of money doesn't need to worry about funding projects. A priest who left money on the table just ends up making his priestly objectives that much harder to achieve.

Good point. This whole thing is just weird. It's not a bad thing to go into that career, but geez...

Because its going to be tough being a young, extremely good baseball player without being exposed to temptation. Personally I dont believe in religion, but If its going to make him happy, he should go for it. Its certainly an odd case though.

Wayne Simien was a draft pick for the Heat and was so tempted on road trips, he used to call his preacher and his preacher's kids to keep him from becoming a sinner. Besides, if youre one of the guys you should be able to share a beer or go to a restaurant or bar and its hard to say no.
