Giving up their high first.

If they give up a first for Darnold, I'll become a full time Falcons fan.

Ultimately, I think they ride with Geno for one more year. Not a ton of great options.

The jets will need a QB if Rodgers is released.
They could give up another top first rounder for Darnold. lol

Agreed. I do think Colts and Steelers may become options. Colts have a pretty solid roster right now and if they bail on Richardson.

Steelers are my sleeper for this. Russ is a FA this off-season and he’s kind of started to drop off. Very well coached team and a team that is always in a win now mindset. Also right now sitting at the 25th pick. So a late 1st round pick to get Darnold.

Rams could be another sleeper as well. A potential out with Stafford’s contract this offseason and a similar offense as KOC. Plus again another later 1st round pick.

Also yes this is 100% coming from a Vikings bias haha

Do the Vikings get to use a franchise tag on a player whom they signed as a free agent just last season?

In the NBA, they wouldn't get those kinds of rights unless they traded for him.

When Cousins was with Washington, they got to use it for two seasons before he because UFA but they had drafted him and he had played his whole rookie contract with them. So do NFL teams get to use franchise tags on players who've just played a season with them?

In any event, looks like the team is fully behind Darnold, though the playoffs are going to really set his value.

Ya they can franchise tag him. No restrictions when it comes to that

Well Shefter just said that the Vikings would most likely get what they gave up for McCarthy plus more if they traded him. Because he thinks most teams would view him as the #1 QB in this draft if he came out. And even with the loss of a year on the contract, the demand for QBs this year at the top of the draft is that high.

If I’m the Vikings, I’d tag Darnold then have trade discussions. If JJ can fetch you a top 10 pick, bye JJ. If Darnold can fetch you a late 1st, then I’d say bye to him instead. I’d take a late first and all the cap space with JJ over keeping Darnold and a top 10 pick for JJ.

I think Steelers or Rams could be possible landing spots for Darnold in a trade.

Darnold for sure will fetch a 1st rounder unless he totally craps the bed in the playoffs. Probably another mid to late pick on top. There is shortage of good quarterbacks and most teams start the season thinking they are at least a qb away from going deep, there will be desperate teams.

How good would Darnold be without Jefferson or Addison or Hockenson as targets?

Sure. But it’s not like there are teams with solid weapons that could use a QB.

The Saints have legit weapons. The Steelers have legit weapons. The Rams have legit weapons. The Colts have good weapons. Seattle if they move off of Geno.

All these teams could be in play looking for a new QB next season. And this isn’t like a Case Keenum situation 7 years ago, a journeyman backup with limited physical tools. Darnold was a top 3 pick for a reason. He also just spent the last 2 seasons getting coached up by Shanahan and KOC.

Also most front offices and coaching staffs have the view point of, if they coaching staff can get that out of this player, I know we can as well.

Clock struck midnight for Cinderella Darnold?

He's going to have to show out in the wildcard game because one and out for a 14-win team is not a good look.

So now the Vikings may pivot to McCarthy.

Actually unless Darnold at least got them to the SB and played well even if they lost, the Vikes are pot-committed to the 10th pick of the 2024 draft.

While he's on a rookie contract, they need to find out if this is going to be their guy or just a guy.

Or it depends on how far they think they're away from the Lions in the division. IF they think Darnold could lead them to winning the division next season and contending to at least win the NFC, they might have McCarthy sit and "learn" for another season.

But if they believe that they overachieved this year and that they have to build up the rest of the roster while McCarthy has a low salary cap number, best to find out if he's their franchise QB.

The Vikings plan has always been to try take advantage of having a QB on a rookie contract. They'll spend in free agency and attempt to put the best team around McCarthy that they can.
They will still probably spend on decent backup like they did this year with Darnold just in case McCarthy isn't ready right away. Daniel Jones is probably the favorite now for the Vikings to sign to that role.

Seems to be widely assumed that Rodgers will part ways with the Jets. But he’s under contract for 2025 and would have a $23.5 million cap hit?

Apparently the Jets tried to impose conditions.

The Jets were open to the possibility of Rodgers remaining with the team if he agreed to make a few adjustments.

Rodgers would no longer be allowed to make outside media appearances including on "The Pat McAfee Show." Rodgers also would be required to attend all mandatory practices.

The Jets viewed it as a necessary step as they attempt to institute a culture of more accountability.

That was his red line, being able to continue doing the Pat MacAfee show?

It kinda makes sense, he is more or less done as an NFL player so it is understandable he would prioritize his media career.
