Detroit Lions sign QB Drew Henson

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Aug 22, 2008 11:55 pm

The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Drew Henson, a high school and college standout who has struggled at the professional level in baseball and football.

Terms of the signing, announced on the team’s Web site, weren’t disclosed.

Henson was signed after second-year quarterback Drew Stanton sprained the thumb on his throwing hand in practice Thursday. He will be sidelined about a month.

The 28-year-old Henson shared quarterback duty at Michigan with Tom Brady. He played three seasons as a third baseman in the New York Yankees’ organization before the NFL’s Houston Texans drafted him in the sixth round, 192nd overall, in 2003.

Henson was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2004, started one game and was released at the end of the 2006 preseason. He signed with the Minnesota Vikings, who released him after training camp in 2007.

At least he's going to Detroit, where dreams come true.

EDIT: No wait, Detroit is where dreams go to die. Disney is where dreams come true.

Just when my Lions are going thru a nice, quiet, unassuming offseason...

Henson is strictly a camp arm and he'll be released once Stanton gets healthy, which should be around Week 3 or 4. One of the reasons they picked up Henson is so Dan Orlovsky wouldn't feel threatened about hsi roster spot.

Ic, what are the chances Brian Calhoun becomes a regular part of the Lions' offense?

After seeing today's game, about as much chance as I have of replacing Matt Millen. I would strongly guess he'll be cut in the next roster shrinkage.

FYI--Kevin Smith looked absolutely fantastic once again. Think a faster Curtis Martin or perhaps Clinton Portis, and that's not just me saying that--the talk on Browns radio after the game was as much about how good Smith looks as it was how shaky Brady Quinn looked.
