I'd take Rivers straight up over Eli. Merriman is just the icing on the (roided) cake...

 WHy is this a debate.
Both teams are happy.

Giants have a ring and are going to get another one.
While the Chargers has noodle armed Rivers and Merriroid. And ain't going to win any rings if LT is on his decline like he looks to be now.

Yes, you win a hypothetical talent debate. Unfortunately for the Chargers, they don't hand out rings for having a better QB than the Super Bowl champions.

I look at is this way; the Chargers with Eli are somewhat worse & the Giants with Rivers & Merriman probably win multiple titles. Either way the result is the same. Giants = champions Chargers = AFC playoff team.

So who really wins?

 ok. Pure talent wise yes Rivers+Merriman is ahead of Manning by a decent amount but the Chargers have yet to make it to the Superbowl & if LT is on the downside of his career/misses a good deal of time then the Chargers will never make it. Not to mention the kind of hit having Rivers+Merriman your cap takes.

obviously talent wise it's SD. But NYG didn't lose either...

eli can still be a very good qb, but he's not one quite yet.

In 2007, Shawne Merriman’s ($ 2,269,420) + Philip Rivers’ ($ 8,905,760) salaries accounted a mere $1,128,514 more than Eli Manning’s contract alone against the cap.

It's the next contracts that are going to ruin the Chargers cap. Rivers will get at least equal $$ to Eli, and then Merriman will get top 5 LB $$ on top of that. If they decide to keep him, which is not a given. And if there's still a cap, also not a given. Of course the way you can manipulate contracts, it's hard to say. The highest paid OL in the league in 2007, per cap figure, was Ryan Pontbriand.

The more I watch team sports (specifically football and baseball), the more convinced I am that superior talent doesn't win games or championships. Assembling a cohesive team that fits well together is far more important than having better individual talent at every position. Look at the Bengals--they have a great deal more talent than teams like KC or MIA or SF but they'er not going to win half as many games as any of those teams. Same reason why I predicted Dallas wouldn't make the playoffs this year, too many individuals, not enough team. Hey, it's still early!
