Polamalu: We've Lost The Essence Of What Real Football Is About
ESPN - Steelers' safety Troy Polamalu is concerned with the recent influx of fines levied against his teammates and other defensive players across the NFL.
"I think regarding the evolution of football, it's becoming more and more flag football, two-hand touch," Polamalu said. "We've really lost the essence of what real American football is about. I think it's probably all about money. They're not really concerned about safety.
"When you see guys like Dick Butkus, the Ronnie Lotts, the Jack Tatums, these guys really went after people," Polamalu told reporters. "Now, they couldn't survive in this type of game. They wouldn't have enough money. They'd be paying fines all the time and they'd be suspended for a year after they do it two games in a row. It's kind of ridiculous."

I'm not sure how it benefits the NFL when the money goes to charity, and when players pay fines they get to deduct it from their taxes.
Not saying I agree with all the fines but I don't see how the league benefits from the money...

Re: NFL and Goodell just got OWNED
Its all PR... its because of retards like Travis Henry, Chris Henry, Rae Carruth, Pacman Jones, Cedric Benson, Odell Thurman (list could continue for pages) that Goodell is over-reacting.
I hate Goodell's over-the-topness as much as anyone... he's taking a few people who should be made examples out of (how is C. Henry still in this league?) and applying the same rules to other people who don't deserve it. Fines for late hits instead of penalties, and fines for any kind of celebration at all essentially... way to stay in touch with this generation... Polamalu nails it - the NFL is becoming the leagues for personality-challenged pussies...

The fines (and donations) help the NFL's image (I guess to sponsors and christian mothers) and then they turn around and sell videos of all these hits they're fining at the NFL Shop.

Re: NFL and Goodell just got OWNED
It's funny watching this Giants/Niners wildcard game from '03 on NFLN, besides being an awesome game, you can see how the game is different from just 5 years ago. It's not even things that are real obvious to see, it's just something about the game being more passionate. The taunts, celebrations, and some stuff that would probably be called "unecessary roughness" today. (granted there was still some of the current pansy stuff like touching the QB's helmet)
I dont mind the discipline for legal issues, flags + fines on horse collars and dangerous helmet-to-helmet hits, but otherwise let the players play.

I agree. Players should be fined for legal issues, dangerous hits, etc.. However, if there is no flag thrown during the game, a player shouldn't be fined in my opinion. It's pretty rediculous. I also can't stand how the NFL pretty much ignores the momentum factor. The fact that these guys are big and move very fast is just flat out overlooked most of the time.
Fining for celebrations and taunting is stupid too. I can see penalties for bringing props like cell phones and shirts and things like that or delay of game penalties if the celebration goes on too long. But fines for "coordinated celebrations"? I mean, come on. Most of that stuff is all in good fun and pretty harmless.

Re: NFL and Goodell just got OWNED
Its ridiculous when a player gets fined for being a good blocker like Ward. Or if you score a touchdown. That Chris Johnson stuff was stupid. Celebrations shouldn't get fined unless they're vulgar or something.
