49ers still want quarterback Alex Smith?

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Jan 23, 2009 3:36 pm

The 49ers want quarterback Alex Smith to return to the club in 2009. Smith said he wants to return. Therefore, the only thing that will keep that from happening is the 49ers' ability to work out a contract agreement with Smith's agent, Tom Condon.

After numerous conversations over the past month with people in and around the 49ers, including Smith, all signs point to the 49ers making a concerted effort to retain Smith for at least another season. Smith is signed for two more years, but his contract calls for him to earn unrealistic base salaries of $9.625 million in 2009 and $15.05 million in 2010.

Smith and his agent know that no team in the league is going to pay him that kind of money. The 49ers will want to slash Smith's salary, to be sure. But the 49ers still have every reason to want to give Smith a chance to prove whether he is capable of being a productive NFL starter. Smith is young enough to turn his career around. He turns 25 in May.

Hooray for drafting quarterbacks #1 overall!

Translation. We want to make it look like we still appreciate you, but you're going to have to give us some money back 'cause you suck.

The next time a Tom Condon client takes a real pay cut, I'll buy a TO jersey and do crunches in my driveway.

Here's what is going to happen:
They will try to get him to restructure his deal, but the difference between what he's willing to accept and what the Niners are willing to pay him to be the #3 QB is too great. Then they'll try to shop him, but nobody else is going to pay him on his current deal either. So he'll get released, or perhaps traded on the condition his deal is restructured. And it looks like there will be a market for him if he allows himself to be affordable (no sure thing with his agent). Dallas desperately wants something behind Romo, the Jets need at least one new QB, St. Louis is interested in upgrading behind Bulger, Washington the same behind Campbell--all with the unspoken hope that Smith would be able to take over the starting job in another year or two.

The Redskins would want Smith to take over for Campbell eventually?

In that case it would be more of a younger plan B. But I know some influential people in Ashburn aren't real thrilled with Campbell, and Todd Collins is older than Kurt Warner. It's not like $$ is an object for Mr. Snyder, so they are probably one of the most likely destinations.

I heard he's already doing short tosses so he should be fine.
On a related shoulder note, Kyle Boller is done.

:(

I'll always remember the best play of his career

the HAIL MARRY attempt on MNF vs the undefeated pats that was caught at the 3rd yard line and was sooo close to the endzone but then was tackled.

great game....RIP Boller's career

Glad to hear that. Jason Candle is a very frustrating player and I don't think I can handle his inconsistencies and inability to read defenses anymore.

by the way, anyone word on Colt Brennan? The dude already has a cult following in DC. It would be an epic disappointment if he ends up as a typical sixth round scrub.

Wait, what was expected out of a 6th round system quarterback?

Colt Brennan will be one of the best pre-season QB's of all time.
