Dallas: Roy Williams may get cut

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Thu Feb 26, 2009 7:36 pm

The Dallas Cowboys may cut ties with former Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, a potential transaction that would create an additional $2.18 million against the 2009 salary cap.

Williams finished last season on injured reserve with a broken forearm, starting just two games and recording six tackles.

For his career in Dallas since being drafted in the first round in 2002 out of Oklahoma with the eighth overall pick, Williams has 506 tackles and 19 interceptions.

Meanwhile, Schefter reports that the Cowboys are expected to cut backup quarterback Brad Johnson for an additional $2 million in salary-cap space.

Cowboys trying to trade S Roy Williams

There may soon be only one Roy Williams on the Dallas Cowboys roster.

The Cowboys have contacted NFL teams trying to trade Williams, a five-time Pro Bowl safety in his seven seasons in Dallas, FOXSports.com has learned. If a deal can't be reached, Williams could be released to clear room for the Cowboys under the salary cap.

Williams played in only three games last season because of forearm injuries. Although regarded as a strong tackler, Williams has struggled in coverage and is no longer considered a good fit for Dallas' 3-4 scheme under head coach Wade Phillips.

Williams, 28, is scheduled to earn a $4.4 million base salary in 2009. He is under contract through 2010.

The Cowboys traded with Detroit for wide receiver Roy Williams during the 2008 season.

For a minute, I thought it was the WR Roy Williams.

Now that would have been an epic fail.

Is Roy Williams even a decent S to begin with? I could've sworn many Cowboys fans complaining about his lack of effort/desire while on the field and such.

Roy Williams got by for a long time because of his ability to "Lay the Wood" only problem with that is the fact that he struggles to tackle. Its no secret, that's why every TE salivated when they lined up against Williams. It was epic to watch Shockey always abuse him. He is solid when the play is in front of him, if its beyond him forget it. He might have to turn into a linebacker I think, but whats a linebacker who cant tackle or cover?

Well to be fair, Chris Claiborne had potential. The funny thing is that I actually looked at the linebackers they had since Spielman retired and there best linebacker might have been Earl Holmes. I didn't want to believe this, but wow its true. Boss Bailey comes in and becomes the new Claiborne and the process continues up until Ernie Sims. The Lions are priceless.

he was exposed once darren woodson retired, he was great when woodson was back there though. he got a little to much blame for our secondary woes, but we were thin at the safety position all year last year though
