Chirs Johnson vs. Usain Bolt race planned

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Mon Jan 4, 2010 6:40 pm

Chris Johnson is the sixth NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards.

But how would he fare on a running track, without a helmet and pads, against the world's fastest man?

We just might find out.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that representatives for the Titans running back and Olympic champion Usain Bolt of Jamaica have spent recent days trying to set up a race between the two men to determine who really is the world's fastest human.

The race would be used to raise money for charity.

Bolt won three gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, setting world records in the 100 meters and 200 meters and sharing a third world record with the Jamaican 4x100 meter relay team. At last year's world championships, he shattered both of his own sprinting records, running the 100 meters in 9.58 seconds and the 200 meters in 19.19 seconds.

Johnson on Sunday became the NFL's sixth 2,000-yard rusher when he completed his season with 2,006, breaking Earl Campbell's franchise record of 1,934. The second-year back from East Carolina also broke Marshall Faulk's NFL single-season record with 2,254 total yards from scrimmage.

At the 2008 NFL scouting combine, Johnson was timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.24 seconds -- the fastest time clocked at the combine that year.

According to sources, the one hangup seems to be the length of the race. Johnson wants the race to be 60 yards or less, while Bolt would like it to be longer.

Johnson's longest run from scrimmage this season was a 91-yard touchdown run in Week 2. Link

If they run in pads for only 40 yards, Johnson has a chance. Bolt's problem is getting out the gates, so it will not be a complete slaughter in a short race.

If I'm CJ, there's no way I run this race.

It's better to think that I might be the fastest, rather than to know that I am not.

Seriously, Bolt smokes people who do nothing but speed train all day, every day. Does CJ, who is half a foot shorter than Bolt, really think he has a shot?

Having said that, I'd still love to see it, just to gauge how much faster Bolt is than every single player in the NFL.

For charity-- why not? Really no reason not to.

Have them run two different races or something if they disagree. It'd be fun to see.

I would bet on CJ in pads to be honest.

I'm also curious to see how much Bolt wins by though, since I think Johnson is about as fast a player I've ever seen in pads.

I would love to see them do 100 yards in pads and helmets.

Anyone else think that Bolt's run in the Olympics was one of the coolest things ever? What an amazing display of physical dominance.

Tim Brown?

Icness, the way the 100-metre dash keeps getting broken, I don't think it's that amazing anymore. Wasn't Donovan Bailey's run in '96 one of the most dominant... Maurice Green... etc? Give it twenty years and we'll see some guy run 9.64 or something. Not to take away from Bolt, but the word "ever" is what got me in your post.

I don't think the idea of a Bolt/Johnson race is as serious as that one guy wants to make it. If anything, it's a chance for them to meet each other, some positive publicity and a big charitable donation. As mentioned, everyone wins.

Bolt's agent said this is totally false and will never happen. Bolt has nothing to gain and a ton to lose.

I think you should reread his post.

But you're on crack if you don't think Bolt's performance was incredible.

The dominance of Bolt was not only shown by the time, but how easily he won and how he seemingly coasted to the world record.

I can think of a few guys off the top of my head that were faster than Tim Brown. What Chris Johnson does is unheard of. He doesn't run through you, or around you, or wiggle too much, or juke and spin, or what not, he pretty much just hits holes maybe makes one cut and maybe a move and burns right past anyone, even guys with a really good angle on him.

Bolt was impressive because he let up at the end and still shattered the record.

Hey Rooster!

I think you're not really grasping the scale here. First off, Bolt's record stands at 9.58.

What makes Bolt so amazing (aside from his additional dominance in the 200), is by how much he's lowered the record. Bolt's lowered the record from 9.74 to 9.58 in 2 seasons. A 1.7% improvement. The last 1.7% improvement from (9.92 to 9.74) took 20 years. Make no mistake, Bolt's time record will eventually be broken, but I don't know if we'll ever see someone lower time like Bolt's done, and there's no reason to think he's done.

This. I don't know the numbers, but I doubt Bolt's the best 40 yard sprinter among Olympic sprinters. Where Johnson is a little boy compared to Bolt is in top speed achieved.
