Donte' Stallworth signs with Ravens

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Wed Feb 17, 2010 10:53 pm

The Baltimore Ravens, desperate for receivers for young star quarterback Joe Flacco, have signed free-agent wideout Donte' Stallworth, who sat out the 2009 season after being convicted of vehicular homicide in Miami.

Stallworth, 30, will immediately compete for playing time on a team with an uncertain future at receiver. Incumbent Derrick Mason's future is uncertain; he almost retired last year and the team isn't sure if he'll return for the 2010 season. And number two wideout Mark Clayton, the club's top draft choice in 2005, caught just 34 balls last year.

Stallworth has been working out intensively in Miami since the accident and his controversial 24-day jail sentence (he also reported made an out-of-court settlement exceeding $3 million with the family of the man who was killed in the accident). Recently, he said he ran three 40-yard dashes clocked in the 4.3-second range. A 2002 first-round pick of the Saints, he hasn't had a top season since he caught 70 passes with seven touchdowns in 2005 for New Orleans.

I could see this working out, besides how most people feel about Stallworth, he has a lot to prove and could be a big addition to that receiving core. He is already the best wideout to stretch the field for that team.

Very surprised he didn't sign with the Lions. Don't know the details of BAL's deal but I suspect they outbid DET.

If he can stay healthy and he's right in the head he'll help them. But this is a guy who routinely missed games and practices for injuries that other guys just shrug off.

If the last year hasn't change his outlook on life and playing in the NFL then nothing will.

If that 4.3 40-yard time is accurate, then yeah it's a great move for BAL. They're probably not paying him that much and they need depth at WR, best of luck to him.

He showed the absolute right way to handle yourself in the face of adversity and for that I really hope he doesn't waste another chance.

The deal was $900K for one year and the Lions (allegedly) offered $775K with some incentives.

I believe that 4.3, before I saw Chris Johnson, I thought Donte was the fastest guy in pads I had watched play in a long long time.

I'm happy about this move. He'll be the deep threat Flacco has never had.

If Mason doesn't retire, our WR core going into next season could do some damage.

If Mason does retire, we're going to absolutely need to make another move.

I don't hate the Skins like many in Baltimore do, but I the Wizards give me enough of a headache. I don't need another inept organization to kill myself over.

Even if Mason stays, the Ravens need help on offense. Flacco didn't look to impressive to me, but he didn't have a great set of receivers to work with.

He was also playing hurt the last half of the season (including playoffs). A lingering leg injury, if my memory serves me right. Not enough to keep him out but enough for him to lose some of his mobility.

I think this next season is HUGE for Flacco. Like Millertime said, he was playing hurt, so I'll give him some B.O.D. But he was not seeing the field real well. It's not like his receivers were great, but I saw a lot of times where he had people open and either didn't see them in time or overthrew the ball (not just length, but velocity). One of the knocks on him pre-draft was that he didn't anticipate routes real well and had difficulty seeing the route adjustments based on coverage. I've seen little to dispel that in his first two years. He's improved, and I think with another legit above-average receiver (not Stallworth) he'll continue to improve. But with that OL and running game he's got to be better himself. One of my bigger offseason questions to chew upon.

Looks like we're working on a trade for Boldin now... Boldin and Stallworth together could do some damage. If we get Boldin, I want Flacco on my fantasy team :)
