Dumb Question

Post#1 » by el loco » Sun Oct 24, 2010 5:25 pm

Is there a statistical study that can be found on the time that it takes for a QB to hand the ball of to his RB that can be found anywhere?

I am watching the Steelers/Dolphins game and it seems through the eye test to me that Big Ben is much slower in his delivery in doing this then Batch or Dixon was when they were starting. He really telegraphs the run when he does it, which seems to tip the defense.

I've never seen one but it's not a bad question or idea.

Sometimes the delilberate long helps set up play action. Boomer Esiason always had a slower pace to his handoffs but he remains the greatest play-action faker of all time.

I actually, thought about that when I thought of the question (2nd guessing myself), but I don't think it is the case in this situation. I think it has to do with him being a big burley/lankey QB in comparison to a quicker QB like Dixon and Batch are.

edit: back on to your thought, whether Big Ben does it deliberately or not, I think it benefits him in play action, that and he has a pretty nice pump fake, but he does seem slower with the hand off to me. A split second here and there makes a big difference in the outcome of a play. I think it would be a pretty cool stat to see to compare QB's.

colts are normally slower at it too but that's b/c they love the stretch plays and peyton is also amazing at the playaction
