ESPN: Sources: Wade Phillips Fired

Post#1 » by BIGGIEsmalls 23 » Mon Nov 8, 2010 8:23 pm

The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly fired Head Coach Wade Phillips. Offensive Coordinator Jason Garret promoted to Head Coach. Link Below.

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones fired coach Wade Phillips on Monday, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder.

The move comes less than a year after he was given a two-year contract extension for leading the Cowboys to their first playoff win in over a decade. He will be replaced by offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, the sources said.

The end for Phillips came after a 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night extended Dallas' losing streak to five games as the Cowboys -- which began the season with Super Bowl expectations -- fell to 1-7 overall.

Phillips ends his time in Dallas with a 35-23 record, having won two NFC East titles and getting the Cowboys' first playoff victory since 1996. Phillips is 83-65 overall as a head coach.

Jones, who had never fired a coach in-season since purchasing the team in 1989, had said multiple times that Phillips would finish out this season. The owner cited research showing interim coaches are not successful and that was a deterrent for him making the change

I remember Garrett was supposed to be the next big head coach in the league or something. That was 4 years ago. Why hasn't he gotten a shot anywhere?

Anyhow its not going to help. A teams best strength was its passing game but their QB got hurt and now they cant pass. Their Oline and running game still is no good and their defense is embarrassing.

He hasn't got a job anywhere else because he was basically promised this job in the long run. Firing Wade is a cop out anyway. Cowboys have plenty of other problems and this is just the beginning.

A very nice guy but obviously a move everyone expected. More blame to the players but you can't fire them.

Took them long enough.

It's a shame that the players ran away Parcells because they wanted a player-friendly coach. Now they have quit on that coach (Wade Phillips). Jerry Jones has no one to blame but himself.

I knew a change had to be made but this won't solve all the Cowboys problems. Wade got the short end of the stick here. He didn't fumble the ball, drop balls or throw interceptions. I blame the players on the team than him. I actually blame Jerry Jones because Jones was the one who drafted these players, But since Jerry can't fire himself I guess Wade had to do.

I'm not suprised he got canned. But this doesn't solve any of their problems.

Ugliest cheerleader ever. What a loser.

Will miss him on the sidelines. Good thing the Cowboys as a team are horrible without a lot of great talent.

Jerry had better pray there's no lockout because that will severely inhibit his ability to hire a prominent coach. Gruden, Billick, Cowher et al are not going to take any job when they won't have the full and proper offseason to get their team ready. IMO none of those guys would take the Dallas job because of Jerry, unless a legit GM is brought in a la what Dan Snyder did.

My early stab at the eventual coach: John Fox. Sleeper: Marty Mornhinweg. Just guesses.

cowboys had the same core players intact for the last 2 years where they won the nfc east. now all of a sudden they forget how to play? got to blame the coach

They didn't win the NFC East in 08.

The core is not the same. The secondary, the offensive line, the linebackers and the defensive line are significantly worse.

I think that Mornhinweg is better off as being an assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
