I think the rotation question boils down to when and in what capacity pedro returns.

Pedro Martinez
Tom Glavine
El Duque
John Maine
Oliver Perez

Sheets
Capuano
Suppan
Bush
Vargas/Gallardo

Those are both pretty darn good rotations.

Overall I think its definitely too early to be able to tell who is the best team in the NL. But its time for the crew to be considered strongly.

And don't forget to vote JJ into the allstar game even in the SS rich NL. He deserves it.

Great post. The Mets are defiantly a very good team. They have the offense to win games and when Pedro returns they have that, well if he's still good, dominant starter to help them. Both the Brewers and mets will contend for the best record in the NL for the whole season.

For the sake of staying updated, make that 1-1.

Yep, good win today. Pelfrey is 0-5 for a reason, but the Brewers beat up on that bullpen. The Braves also appreciate the win, it's hard to win the NL East when we're the only team that owns the Mets. :D

Pedro isn't returning to become the Pedro Martinez of old... he isn't going to be an ace anymore.

Man, there are some clueless and ignorant people posting in this thread. Lineup is nothing to fear? Once Braun gets up, you're looking at:

Weeks
Hardy
Braun
Fielder
Hall
Estrada
Jenkins
Hart

Where is the hole in this lineup? Braun is hitting .360 with 8 HR in AAA and is considered a can't miss prospect (at least at the plate). Hall had 35 bombs last year and hasn't gotten going yet. Weeks has started slow but has all the talent in the world, and both Fielder and Hardy are two very good hitters. Estrada hit .300 as a catcher and is again this year.

Anyone who says that lineup is "nothing to fear" is a moron, plain and simple. Just because they don't have a known superstar doesn't mean jack.

And the stats don't lie. Go look em up.

After today's game, the weak Brewers offense has the highest OPS in the NL (2nd highest in baseball behind the Red Sox) and has scored the second most runs in the NL behind the Phillies.

You also forgot to mention that...

-Jenkins is on fire
-Hart hasnt gotten going yet and had some nice production in a short period last season
-Hitting is in Gwynn's blood
-Kevin Mench looks like Shrek! :D

It really hasnt felt like our offensive production has been that great. It truly feels like something is missing. Maybe starting Gwynn and calling up Braun could fill the void

Where's Gwynn going to play? Are you going to play him over Hall, Jenkins or Hart? The guy's had 32 AB's where he's hit well, he had 87 AB's last year where he hit in the low .200's and everybody was still riding his jock.

It was also his first year in the big league.

I have been a big fan of Gwynn ever since i first seen him play last year, i think he can be a juan pierre type player

What is this the "Official Brewers Thread" on the general board now?

By the way Gwynn isn't good, quit getting all excited.

.464 BABIP and .704 PrOPS, lucky bastard.

And Pierre is a nice player but overrated by some. His career OPS is only .724 due to a dismal .375 slugging percentage. I suppose its not like you expect power out of the guy, but then you'd hope for more than a career .349 on base percentage. One that seems to have declined a little recently: last three years (counting this year so far) his on base is, .326, .330, 3.13. The steals are great but it'd be better if he got on base more often.

I think he works nicely behind Furcal (I think they put Pierre in the 2-hole correct me if I'm wrong) in LA but isn't the ideal lead off guy some imagine. So if that's TGJ's ceiling, he'd be a nice player but not necessarily an everyday one imo.

As far as today goes, I think Mench and Hart are the choices to face a lefty starter. Provided Hart is close to 100 percent. If he's not then I have no problem with Gwynn again (over Jenks and Gross who have a apparent phobia of southpaws).

So who are the other top teams in the NL? Braves, Mets, and Dodgers it looks like. If both the Metropolitans and the Braves keep it up either one would be a tough wildcard draw for anyone. (Obviously projecting way in advance since its ONLY MAY as crew fans are reminded every day by those waiting for the other shoe to drop).

Edited to add:

This will probably be the "official unofficial brewers thread" while the team keeps playing well. Then when we hit a rough stretch it will be the "official brewers were playing above their heads I told you so thread" followed by the "Nah, we're back deal with it thread" once the team rebounds and puts together another good stretch.

If any other NL leading (or contending for their division) teams fans want to pipe up they can feel free.

He's going to be the player Juan Pierre has been the past couple years. Give him 600 AB's a season and I doubt his OBP gets over .330.
