Looking Ahead: Be Your Favorite Team's GM

Post#1 » by Da Schwab » Wed Feb 5, 2014 6:56 pm

I got this idea while I was sitting around with some friends last night and we basically went around the room saying what we'd do to make (or keep) our favorite teams competitive in 2014.

It's pretty simple, and can be as long or short as you'd like, but just give a rundown to what your plan in the offseason would be to fix your team. You can add free agents, propose trades, get deep into drafting/scouting, etc.

If you were the GM, what would you do to make your team better for 2014?

Redskins...

I wouldn't focus so much on trying to be better in 2014. The problem for years has been trying to fix all our needs in one off season with FA. We need to commit to rebuilding. We have a TON of holes(especially on D), no way one off season fixes all of it, especially without a first rounder.

First off, our own FAs. I'd prioritize resigning Brian Orakpo, although I wouldn't pay too much. He's a B to B+ player, if he wants A player, Aldon Smith/Terrell Suggs type money I'd franchise him and try to trade him for a pick. Perry Riley is a decent player, I'd try to resign him but he's no star and if he gets a big offer elsewhere, let him walk. Deangelo Hall had a good year but he's too much of a long term risk being that he's over 30.

For other teams FAs, I wouldn't go after anyone significant, but if we can get some decent value starters I'd consider it. I like Edelman from NE, but can't see them letting him walk. I'd stay away from any of the other WRs, too many question marks. Nicks and Maclin are injury concerns, and Decker who knows how good he'll be away from Manning.

For the draft, I'd just look at adding talent. The only positions I wouldn't draft in the 2nd round would be QB, RB, and TE(and OLB if we resign Rak). We need as much talent as possible. I like Cousins but if we could somehow trade him for a 2nd, I'd do it for a heartbeat(won't happen though). For a 3rd I'd consider it. RG3 has question marks but our best hope at being a contender is if he develops into an elite(or at least very good)pocket passer with hopefully his 2012 athleticism and speed returning another year removed from the ACL.
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

vikings:

get a good qb
somehow keep harrison smith and xavier rhodes healthy
couple new linebackers
let chris cook go (couple new guys in the secondary would be good too)

and do a lot of praying to the football gods to end the vikings outdoor woes as they have to play their home games outside for the next two years

San Francisco 49ers

Top Needs: WR, CB, S

Key Free Agents: WR Anquan Boldin, SS Donte Whitner, CB Tarell Brown, K Phil Dawson, C Jonathan Goodwin, WR Mario Manningham

Cap Space: $7.3M

Draft Picks: 30, 56, 61, 77, 94, 125, 158, 189, 219, 220, 222

Free agency/cap moves: Cut Carlos Rogers and renegotiate Gore to create more cap room (these two moves should create ~$10M in cap space). If amenable, extend Vernon and Justin Smith in order to lower their cap hits this year and create more space.

Boldin should be re-signed as long as his demands are not outrageous, two year deal at around $5-6M APY. I suspect Dawson will be re-signed as well, probably to a deal similar to last year's (1 yr, $2.5M). Let Whitner, Goodwin and Manningham walk. Brown is the toughest FA to judge. He's a good but not spectacular CB in a year with a very deep CB class, both in the draft and FA. My gut is that he comes back to the Niners for something like 3 years, $14M but much more than that and I suspect he'll price himself out of a return to SF.

The rest of the free agents can be dealt with as needed later in the offseason. Use the cap space that's left to start extension negotiations with Kap, Aldon and Crabtree (in that order). Generally do not plan on the Niners being a player in the FA market, save for picking up some undervalued vets later on in the process.

Draft: move up if Evans/Lee (WR) or Dennard/Gilbert (CB) start to slip in to the late teens/early 20's. Otherwise target WR, CB, and S in the early rounds and look to fill secondary needs/draft for pure talent in the mid-late rounds.
