Question regarding receiving stats

Post#1 » by maxpower88 » Tue Jul 14, 2015 3:06 pm

Ok one thing that confuses me about NFL is how receiving yard statistics are counted. Does the yard gainage start from the line of scrimmage, or from the point the recever caught the ball?

So if QB A passes from the 10 yard line to WR B, who catches it at the 20 yard line, runs 10 yards then gets tackled at the 30. Did the WR gain 10 yards or 20 yards?

And for the passing stats, does the passer only gain credit for the yards the ball traveled until it was caught?

He gained 20 and the QB also gets 20. But the extra 10 yards that WR B gained after the catch also goes into a category called Yards after catch or YAC.

Its yards he gained on the catch AND yards he gained after the catch. So if he catches a 10 yard pass, and then runs for 20 yards, its considered a 30 yard catch. And with that, the QB gets credit for a 30 yard completion.

There are seperate stats like YAC(yards after catch)that track yards after a catch has been made. They're not really widely used though, compared to the primary stats. YPC(yards per catch)is also another one.
