Cuban submits application to buy Cubs

Controversial Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Thursday that he has submitted his application to purchase the Cubs. He said he believed he sent it in last week, though he wasn't sure. Dates don't matter anyway. What matters is that he's officially serious about buying the valuable, championship-starved franchise on the North Side.

I'm not getting my hopes up.

- Selig's personality may be the exact opposite of Cuban's. He wants to ruin the league as he sees fit with as little ownership input as possible. Mark will always make a stand or fight for a decision or cause he believes in.

- Cuban buying the team would really help the Cubs. Our spending would get even higher, we'd become a hugely attractive FA spot since every athlete under Cuban loves him, and there would be a lot of excitement around the team. Selig, Brewers owner in trust, probably wouldn't like to see any of those things.

I think it's in the best interest of the Cubs and baseball if Cuban buys the team. But Selig has proven before he's not above bad decisions for his own benefit.

By the way...can you guys imagine Cuban in a league without a salary cap? We'd never hear about ownership being unwilling to pay a salary, or take on money, etc. He has all the money in the world and is always willing to spend it to improve his team.

While Cuban certainly has money don't think for a second that he will spend at all costs. He let Finley go for nothing in order to...save money. I think he'd be a good owner and would certainly add some excitement to the league. But the "Cuban will spend whatever it takes" theory is overblown. And spending money has never been the issue with the Cubs, they've consistently been in the top 10 in payroll.

You are at ~$99 million this year. Z, if you resign him, will get a nice bump. Soriano's pay goes up $4 million next year. Ramirez goes up $6 million next year. Lilly up $2 million. Marquis up $1.6. Dempster up $1. Howry up $1.5 and so on. Just these guys (without Z) increase your payroll about $17 million.

I don't know that Cuban is going to ride in and spend even more.

Cuban is not the best owner in the world but anyone is better than who we have now.
Players will want to play for him.

When Cuban first took over the Mavs he spent freely but over the years he has toned it down. Like MickeyDavis said I don't think he is going to come in and spend like the Yankees.

The last thing our Cubs need is any more coddling. Esp. under the Lou Pinella administration. They have the right guys to win this division right now. Heck, they had the right personnel under Dusty too! Enough is enough by blaming the goat and bartman. Its time to get to the WS and win it! And if they cant make the postseason, fans should just stay the heck home and ostracize the team & management until they put together a product worth coming out to see.

Cuban let Finley go because he was/is washed up and they had a better player in Stackhouse.

He's not going to bring our payroll up to the Yankees, but I doubt he kills deals over paying salary or anything. In a league with so many cheap owners, being willing to pay contracts is a huge advantage. And with the Cubs sale not completed yet, we can't really do that (see: Jacque Jones deal).

No chance...other owners are threatened by him...specifically Jerry Reinsdorf and JR is very influential...Selig is basically his puppet. Even if Cuban has the highest bid I would not expect him to be chosen.

Except that Cuban does like to whine. If he has the highest bid he's not going to just let it go. I imagine lawyers and congressmen will be pulled into it if it's not sold on the up and up.

This isn't a NBA forum, so I don't want to get into it too much. But they've only improved as a franchise since they dropped him and they had a better option at his position. They had the best record in the L, one playoff abberration doesn't take away how good the team is. I don't think Cuban loses sleep over Finley's 11 PPG.

This would be great for the Cubs, because Cuban is a guy who wants to win and win bad.

You get some old suit who isn't as passionate about winning and he might decide he wants to slash payroll to increase his profits, while not being as concerned with winning.
