For me, it looks like a 2 horse race between Brees and Mahomes right now.

Drew Brees. Partly a sentimental pick, but the guy deserves atleast one MVP after having such an illustrious career.

Re: MVP Discussion
Todd Gurley will get the nod if the Rams have the best record.
Drew Brees deserve it but the NFL likes the Rams and especially the LA market...

Re: MVP Discussion
Yes, volume passer. Actually Brees probably has more impressive numbers overall Highest QB rating, TD/Int ratio, record.

Re: MVP Discussion
Someone is going to win for having a Drew Brees-like high volume season, but it won't be Brees.

Re: MVP Discussion
Drew Brees, Patrick Mahomes, Phillip Rivers and I would add Kahild Mack and Aaron Donald.

Re: MVP Discussion
Mahomes will probably break some records, and has almost 1,000 yards more and 50% more tds than Brees, but Brees still has the better td/int ratio (32/5 vs Mahomes 48/11) and far better completion % (74.4% to 66.4%),he better QB rating (slightly) and the better team record.
That being said, it would be hard for me not to vote for Mahomes. Though Brees' completion % has only been beaten once, and that's by Brees.

Re: MVP Discussion
It would be unprecedented to give it someone other than Mahomes. But with the Saints having the better record, if ever there was a year to do it, it's this one.
Just for fun though I'll make my case for Aaron Donald (if he gets 4 sacks and breaks the record):
Rams would be undefeated in games that he gets sacks. Lead the defense that forced Mahomes into 5 turnovers and beat him head to head.
That's really all I got - our defense as a unit is probably too bad for Donald to be seriously considered - but it would be awesome if he was.

Re: MVP Discussion
I don’t mind Mahomes winning, but I do think it’s weird that whenever Brees was blowing records away, the argument was always that raw numbers don’t matter, efficiency and team record should take precedence over records. 50% more touchdowns is great, but he has more than 100% more interceptions as well, and almost double the fumbles.
Now that Brees has 7 game winning drives to Mahomes’ 2, and has a 6-1 record vs playoff teams vs Mahomes 3-4 record, the narrative has shifted.
The Saints are a better and more balanced team. We’d have less wins without our runningback tandem, but Brees would have a lot more touchdowns if it wasn’t so easy for us to punch it in... then the story would be “Brees puts up numbers, but he’s not the top seed!!”
Lets just admit that Narrative is what really matters. Mahomes is the new guy putting up the monster numbers, and that’s a more fun story than Brees having another hall of fame season.

Re: MVP Discussion
When was brees ever inefficient? He has close 70 percent completion and very good td-int ratio past ten years.
Just unfortunate to play in an era with three of the top 5 qbs ever.

He was never inefficient. But there were years where his interceptions and team record were a big part of him not winning despite obliterating records.
And yet two runningbacks, Cam Newton, and Matt Ryan all have MVPs in that time frame.

That's not what the award is for, and adding any element of sentimentality into the decision making completely cheapens it.

Re: MVP Discussion
Brees was never the most dominant player in the league in any given season. Someone was always better, whether it was Brady or Manning or Rodgers, and then there were random years where Newton and Ryan exploded and outplayed him as well. None of this means that Brees isn't an all-time great or isn't an MVP-level player...only Brady has been as consistently good/better.
He's like Dwyane Wade. A truly outstanding player, who imo ranks right up there with the best we've seen out of any SG minus MJ, but you could always point to someone more deserving than him in any given year, which is why he never won an MVP.
Acting like Brees never winning an MVP is some travesty is revisionist history. When Ryan won his MVP, he absolutely deserved it...and Brees wasn't even the next most deserving player, Brady was. When Newton won his MVP, he absolutely deserved it...and again, Brady would have been the next best choice, not Brees.
