Why would you want any of those guys?

Sark is set in college. While Gruden & Pederson are both retreads who wouldn't be upgrades over what you already had.

Jerry is making the right decision to let McCarthy go. But he can't follow it up by making a poor choice in the next HC.

Sounds like Jerry was willing to re-sign MM but for fewer years than MM wanted.

For whatever reason he probably wanted MM back for one more year. Might have been offering a two year extension with the ability to fire after one year. MM probably wanted something more long term with security.
I’m just happy they are moving on.

He will. I’m confident in his ability to make poor choices.

492 coaches left to choose from.

Honestly, it's not a great group of names for coaches this hiring cycle. Ben Johnson is the most desired around the league. But the rest of names is pretty underwhelming. Does Joe Brady or Liam Coen excite anyone? Aaron Glenn?

Kellen Moore seems better suited to be a coordinator & it seems like the league is trending away from guys like Zimmer.

Carroll & McCarthy are solid. But each has a ceiling.

The thing that prevents me from thinking Sark could have a chance at the job is the money. Sark makes about $6M per year and Jerry would not want to pay him that much.

Getting to know him while he was the coach at UW, Sark does not have the personality to mesh with Jerry. He's a control freak.

The chances of him leaving a program like Texas to work for the Cowboys is zero. No chance. Trust me. Wherever that rumor started, It's nonsense.

Agreed… and Ben Johnson isn’t coming here when there are far better options from a personnel standpoint as well as cap structure

Yep. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see Zim load up that hottie he’s seeing and just head down the road.

And - I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Moore in here for an interview pretty quickly unless something happened that nudged him away from the Jones family. That’s the kind of relationship Jerry values… which drives me nuts.

Anyway - I’m prepared to be underwhelmed.

First let me say again that I do not want Sark and I don’t know enough about him to say if you’re right or wrong. I will say though that you might underestimate how desirable an NFL HC job is, even for the bad teams. There are only 32 of those jobs available and of those only a couple become available each year. Also never underestimate the ego on most of these coaches. You don’t think Sark (or any other HC) thinks that HE’s the one that can win in Dallas?

Cowboys should go after Mike tomlin. He needs a fresh start and the Steelers may want to go a new direction. Not sure his contract status but I like that fit

I believe I read somewhere yesterday that the Steelers have said they have no interest in moving on from Tomlin. I would love him in Dallas although I don’t see it happening.

You’re a little low there…

https://longhornswire.usatoday.com/2025/01/10/steve-sarkisian-salary-texas-football/

Steve Sarkisian received $10,600,000 in school pay from Texas in 2024 excluding bonuses.

Sarkisian has a max bonus payout of $1,850,000 in 2024. Sarkisian already earned $750k in bonuses for reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals, and will earn an additional $250k if the Longhorns beat Ohio State and advance to the final.

Should the Longhorns win the national championship, Sarkisian would be owed another $250k bonus.

Sarkisian is the 3rd highest-paid coach in our USA TODAY head coach salary database.

Yeah, that would be a very Jason Garrett like type of hire. Someone that Jerry & the Jones family has ties to. Would make a lot of sense in that regard.

Basically, my point was that he won't take crap from Jerry. Sark is in a good spot & runs the show at a top tier program.

Sark has a big ego. But he won't work for someone like Jerry.

Even more reason why Sark won’t be the guy even if Jerry wants him.

I dont think neither Tomlin or Steelers would accept that. Tomlin has one of the cushiest jobs in the league and Steelers have a coach that can get the most of that team.

Although it may not be a bad idea to go with a defensive coach considering the limitations of Dak and salary cap, then build a power running team that limits Dak's brain farts.

Ok so the Cowboys cannot interview Ben Johnson or Aaron Glen until after their season is over. I would assume the same applies to Kellen Moore. Jerry was never going to even consider Johnson or Glen but I do think Kellen would be a serious candidate for Jerry but this likely rules him out.

So that actual list of HC candidates for the Cowboys really is Zimmer, Gruden, or Doug Pederson. Unless they can convince Belichick to take a buyout? Reports are that he did want to coach the Cowboys.

Pretty sure people are resurfacing Belichick rumors to drum up engagement.

I would love to make another bet if anyone else thinks it's realistic 8-)
