I knew that we nailed that draft once BJJ started slamming it and labeled Tyler Smith a bust.
Unfortunately BJJ was very high on Mazi Smith, so that poor guy probably has no hope.
The thing with Mazi Smith is most rookie defensive tackles don't really produce a lot. Jalen Carter is an exception and maybe even Jordan Davis too honestly.
I agree with this. I thought mazi was drafted too high, but DT is a position that typically takes time to develop. In college you can overpower smaller guys, in the NFL you can’t overpower guys as often anymore. You need to have good technique and counter moves to succeed.
I thought jordan davis had a decent rookie year before his injury in week 8 or whenever it was. Having him out for like 4-5 games really showed how important he was for the eagles run defense. Thing is, the DT position is a position that doesn’t typically rack up a ton of stats, especially for guys that their strength is against the run (like Jordan Davis and mazi smith).
Micah parsons said it when mazi was drafted but mazi is gonna make everybody’s job easier. He’s gonna take on blockers so that other guys have lanes to fill. This is where Jordan Davis’s value is as well. Mazi is still a rookie. He’s not having a great year, but he’s still got plenty of time to develop. Jordan davis needed to develop as well and I think he’s having a pretty good 2nd year.
I always say the most important offseason for a young player is your first full offseason (typically between years 1 and 2 for non injured players). Rookie year before the draft, the players aren’t really trying to get better so much as they are just trying to get drafted. Their first full offseason will give them much more time to develop and get better, so as a fan I think it’s very telling for a player’s development to see how he does after his first full offseason. If he gets better then great, you can continue to increase his projections, but if he’s still struggling then I think that’s when fans need to start worrying.
