Looks like the Chiefs and Mahomes restructured his contract to free up another 17 million for this up coming season. Chiefs up to something but I don't know what it is yet.

Who made the mistake? Chiefs or Mahomes? Seems like Mahomes figured he was in the wrong and started negotiations to give it back

Yeah...they were over the cap. Teams have until Monday. It's why you're seeing all these contract restructures happen now.

He didn't give any money back. That's not how NFL contracts work. Teams are simply able to convert base salary into things like signing bonuses, which reduces a players cap hit. In this scenario, players get more money upfront (signing bonus), so it's really a win/win for both parties.

lol not necessarily. All teams are able to manipulate the cap in this way. So you could sign a guy & he might have a high cap number initially, but by re-structuring the money (Base Salary-Bonus), teams can lower that number significantly.

For instance, Brady agreed to a 2 year, $50 million dollar re-working of his contract. $41m of that he will receive this year. So, it's a great deal for him. Because he gets more guaranteed money (now), and the team is able to free up cap space (now) in the process.

Well yeah, but they signed him to a number. Now they want to change that number. Meaning their initial offer was a mistake

The cap hit itself? Sure. But that's based on how the contract (money) is written up. A player is always going to prefer to have more guarantee's (upfront $$$). The opposite is true for teams (Employer).

This is basically the team appeasing the player by offering/agreeing to give him more $$ upfront.

Chiefs did not make a mistake in signing Mahomes for 9 years, even at that price. you don't let a once in a lifetime generational get away. It does however give Mahomes more leverage with the team with future draft picks and free agents.

If they the Chiefs did not make a mistake, then why reconfigure the contract? Its signed on the dotted line. Its a promise. Its your word. And now they know, it was a mistake handing that type of cash.
Or are you saying, it was a fake. All along knowing, Meh, well just go ahead and change and reconfigure the contract when we need to, when more salary is needed to sign other players. The original contract was just an Advertisement. A Big show. Knowing all along we were going to change it.

Whats wrong with giving Mahomes the “biggest contract ever” PR knowing in advance that they’ll always restructure it to help with the cap situation? I think it’s smart

Yes, that's how these things work. It's all for show.

Brady's new deal is 4 years. But, it's essentially a 2 year deal (as reported). The last couple of years will in all likelihood be voided. This is the case for the vast majority of NFL contracts. The only thing that really truly matters is the guaranteed money. Most players never receive the full amount.

Thankfully Reggie Bush have him his Superbowl before his retirement. After Reggie left, they've never been able to make it back
