Jerry's role is definitely way less than the average fan understands it to be. In some cases it's WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY WAY LESS. There are some fans who literally believe Jerry calls the plays while up in the stands.

Stephen is absolutely being groomed so I'd say he is at the top of the chain, but the reality is that pretty much every single draft pick is not Jerry or Stephen or any one man, it's the result of group effort of various coaches, scouts, ect that all create a big board together.

There are plenty of videos that show this...

This is kind of similar to fans who view wins and loses as only the QB and are incapable of understanding that the final score is a reflection of everyone on the field. The draft picks are the same, they are a reflection of everyone in the war room that all settle on a big board together and make their cases for the guys they like. It's not just the guy who hands the card in.

That's fairly standard around the league. Scouts, coaches, etc. giving their input. If you've watched the recent Hard Knocks.

What's not standard is just how involved Jerry is day to day in the public spotlight. Most owners are in the background. They don't meet with the media after games & hold press conferences. I've seen videos of Jerry in draft War Rooms. You're right, he acts more like a delegator. Still not the norm however.

Yea there are a lot of factors in losses and it’s not ALL on the QB. The problem is you don’t need your QB contributing to the playoff losses. Unfair or not he needs to be perfect or damn near perfect. In the most recent game he threw a pick 6 that essentially put the game out of reach. He wasn’t the sole reason they were in the hole but he was the sole reason the game was out of reach. He can’t do that.

Most owners also don’t have an open door policy where players can go straight to him and bypass their coach if they have a problem. That immediately undermines the HC.

True.

Most owners are not involved in the day to day Football operations. A good majority are probably not even around the team facility most days. That's certainly been the case in Seattle.

We were talking about Jerry the GM, not Jerry the owner. And how involved Jerry is now as the GM. I would bet money most players around the league will go to the GM if they have an issue, that isn't undermining the coach, that is the GM's job.

There are also probably players that go directly to the owner, but sure there are some owners in the NFL that don't even know who their own players are so that is moot. But the ones that are involved? I mean do you think Tom Brady never came to Robert Kraft with anything?

Anyway, my overall point was that it isn't a case of Jerry Jones running everything and anything and everyone else is just a puppet in his little show. That is the implication that most want to give and it just isn't realistic.

The "public spotlight" thing is unique to Jerry, that is a Dallas Cowboy's thing and the spotlight the team gets as a whole is unique.

Generally speaking I don't think most players care or even notice Jerry in interviews. There may be some exceptions but players just want to go out there and get their stats, they aren't going to play soft over a Jerry interview.

Jerry is the ONLY owner who is also the GM. At least he gave himself the title of general manager. So yes, it is quite unique.

Robert Kraft is involved. But Belichick pretty much ran the Football side of things. Kraft wasn't making those decisions.

Fwiw Paul Allen would often attend games in person. But he very rarely would be around the team facility. He was very hands off as an owner. He hired people to run the organization & took a backseat. His sister has since run the team in the same manner. That's typically how it works with only a few exceptions.

When the cowboys won their SBs Jerry was officially the GM. But everyone knows Jimmy ran the show.
Only difference is that Jerry wants everyone to think that he is more involved than he really is.
And people fall for it.

I don't buy that at all. First of all Jerry was never officially the GM till 2002. Second of all, we all knew it was all Jimmy and his show and that drove Jerry nuts. Nobody would give Jerry any credit for any thing and he got pissed and has been trying to prove us all wrong since then. At least us old guard Cowboy fans. The new Cowboy fans don't know any better.

Agreed on most.
But Jerry was designated as GM for all three of the cowboy SBs.

I just remember the day they made it official in 2002. Then Jerry showed us his genius in the draft that year and took Quincy Carter with our first pick.

They got extremely lucky that the Broncos outbid Jerry for Paxton Lynch.

And then wanted to back that up with Johnny Manziel.

If it is true that Jerry wanted Manziel and Stephen wouldn't allow it?

Then Stephen is the one in charge and has been for years now.

Which makes sense to me because that's what it's felt like for years now.

Bengals Mike Brown is GM but there are hands on owners that just don't give themselves the title "GM".

Titles can be misleading....Linda Yaccarino is the CEO of Twitter but we all know who's really calling the shots

lol what are we debating here? It's not the norm in the NFL or really pro sports for that matter. Can we agree on that?
