Part of the problem is that there's a lot of incentives to play QBs sooner than later, try to maximize his production during the rookie contract, so that they could load up the other position and try to hit a contention window before the QB could make big money.

So it seems QBs get pushed into starting sooner than they used to.

That way if a prospect is a bust, they know not to extend him.

Look at Jordan Love, before the latter half of last season, he wasn't looking so great. In fact a season or two ago, he looked in way over his head.

But he had the raw material, good size, arm and athleticism and Packers gave him time to develop. In fact Love didn't start until the last season of his rookie deal and it looked like he wasn't going to make it and then he got hot and earned a huge extension.

So the Packers didn't get the most out of Love's rookie contract but their development staff did a great job and they have a lot of WRs on their rookie deals.

I'm not sure who else on the Packers have big contracts, maybe some of the linemen and edge rushers and other defensive players.

If not for the injury, the Packers were expected to contend for the playoffs again this season and they still may make it.
