The eagles were going to get someone great there anyways. Even Mike Green was still available.
Same thing for the Ravens. They always get someone good.
Trading up 1 spot guarantees that they get their guy. Waiting till their pick a slot later has no guarantees.
That’s why I think the Chiefs called the Eagles and said “hey we’re getting calls for the pick, and they want Campbell. Match their offer (a 5th) and Campbell is yours”. Something along those lines. Clearly that’s speculation but that happens all the time. It could have been a bluff or they could have really been fielding calls for the pick to draft Campbell. Most people had him as a top 15 player so it’s very possible there were multiple teams trying to trade up to draft him.
Yeah and that’s all I’m trying to say, we don’t know what would’ve happened if the eagles didn’t trade up. It’s possible the chiefs were bluffing but it’s also possible their list on desirable moves at that spot went something like:
1. Trade with eagles, get a 5th, draft Simmons
2. Trade with _____, get a 3rd, but probably lose out on Simmons
3. Draft Simmons at #31 and don’t make a trade.
